O'Donovan was sent in second-half stoppage-time for a dangerous challenge on Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas.

Thomas was left flawed and needing treatment following the clash in Victory's 1-0 triumph at McDonald Jones Stadium.

The Irishman's actions initiated a melee between the two sides, with referee Jarred Gillett immediately issuing a red card.

An independent Disciplinary and Ethics Committee hearing will be held on Tuesday at the FFA offices commencing at 5:30pm (AEST).

The independent Match Review Panel (MRP), at a hearing last Monday, regarded the incident as constituting the offence of serious foul play (e.g. when challenging for the ball) and has referred the incident to the independent Disciplinary and Ethics Committee for hearing regarding what sanction should apply over and above the mandatory match suspension (which must always be served).

The MRP had the authority to consider the incident as O’Donovan was issued with a direct red card by the referee.
