Football Federation Australia (FFA) is confident of a vastly improved crowd at Melbourne’s AAMI Park for this year’s FFA Cup final between Melbourne City and Sydney FC.
The Melbourne derby cup semi-final in October also only drew a crowd of 15,791, despite an attendance in excess of 43,000 for the same fixture in the A-League earlier in the month.
Last year’s decider between Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory at the same venue attracted an slightly underwhelming crowd of 15,098.
The season prior, Adelaide United’s final triumph over Perth Glory drew a crowd of 16,124 to Coopers Stadium.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the FFA said this year’s final was on track to break the competition’s attendance record based on the current ticket sales for the match.
As of Wednesday morning, more than 10,000 tickets had been purchased for the showpiece event on Wednesday 30 November.
A-League boss Greg O’Rourke said the strong early ticket sales highlight the growing stature of the FFA Cup Final.
“This is a chance for two clubs to win a piece of silverware,” he said.
“For Melbourne City it would be their first ever trophy and for Sydney FC a first title since their Hyundai A-League championship in 2010, so there is everything to play for and ticket sales to this point reflect the interest and excitement of fans from both clubs.
“As we have seen in the past two editions, there is something special about the atmosphere of a Westfield FFA Cup Final, and with two in form teams reaching the decider, it promises to be another memorable night.”
Tickets start from just $25 for adults and $5 for children, while members of both clubs were able to take advantage of a special discounted priority period.
