Despite playing more than an hour a man down, the Victorian club joined a rare group who have bundled out topflight teams.

Elsewhere an incredible story unfolded in Darwin as Hellenic AC went toe-to-toe with Western Sydney Wanderers, pushing the former Premiers all the way in a seven-goal thriller.

The following teams make up the last 16: Avondale FC, APIA Leichhardt Tigers, Broadmeadow Magic, Queensland Lions, Adelaide Comets, Bonnyrigg White Eagles, Sydney FC, Adelaide United, Heidelberg United, Cairns FC, Bentleigh Greens, Newcastle Jets, Deveonport City, Melbourne Victory, Western Sydney Wanderers and .

Bentleigh Greens 1 (Jankovic 23') - Wellington Phoenix 0

It was not what Phoenix coach Mark Rudan was hoping for on his competitive debut as a professional club coach.

Marco Jankovic latched on a sublime corner kick to head into the net for the only gola of the game. Just 10 minutes later James Kelly was red carded for a second yellow putting the hosts at a numerical disadvantage.

However, Kingston Heath again proved a fortress for Bentleigh where they have won 10 of their past 12 NPL matches.

For the Nix, who lacked penetration in attack, it was another disappointing Cup performance . The Kiwi outfit has only got past the Round of 32 once before, in 2015.

Northcote City 1 (Khalif 85') - Devonport City 3 (Barnard 12', 15', Stone 78')

Northcote's hope of some respite from their league woes wasn't to be as the Tassie side proved lethal in front of goal during the round's only all-NPL clash .

A quickfire brace from Miles Barnard followed by a second half goal from Joel Stone gave the NPL Tasmania high-flyers a comfortable lead before Northcote dragged one back through Yahya Khalif late in the game.

It is the second time Devonport have made the last 16. The first time was back in 2016 when they knocked out Lambton Jaffas.

Gold Coast Knights 0 - Newcastle Jets 1 (Topor-Stanley 11')

Newcastle travelled 17,000 km from their training base in Spain for this one so their first ever Cup win was a huge positive for last season's A-League Grand Finalists.

The Knights hadn't lost a match this season but as the lowest ranked team in the Round of 32 just keeping the Jets to one goal was positive.

Veteran defender  Nikolai Topor-Stanley broke the deadlock early with a shot from close range.

Brisbane Roar  0 - Melbourne City 1 (Fornaroli 120')

With a penalty shootout looming, Bruno Fornaroli struck in stunning fashion to give former Cup winners, City, the win in the 120th minute with one of the goals of the comp.

Brattan serious injury concern

The match was delayed for about 45 minutes following what looked like a horrific injury to City midfielder Luke Brattan. The 28-year-old was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital with reports suggesting the injury was not as serious as first feared.

Hellenic AC 3 (Daniel Smith 39', Sulav maskey 55', 73') - Western Sydney Wanderers 4 ( Billias og 8', Oriol Riera 10' pen, 69', Bonevacia 92')

Top of their league Hellenic, made Western Sydney Wanderers fight every step of the way for the win.

The Northern Territory side were down two goals within the first 10 minutes before making a real contest of it.

At 3-3 the game was headed for extra time before Roly Bonevacia snagged Wanderers fourth with just moments on the clock and saved new manager Marcus Babbel's blushes.

Perth Glory 0 - Melbourne Victory 1 (Barabarouses 38')

Perth Glory probably deserved an equaliser after dominating the second half but Victory did just enough to fight another day.
