FFA CEO David Gallop said any decision around where new expansion teams will be located will include Foxtel following the announcement of a $346 million broadcast deal.
The new broadcast arrangement will see FOX SPORTS continue to broadcast all A-League games live on Foxtel as well as Socceroos, Matildas, W-League and FFA Cup matches.
The deal that is valued at $57.6 million a year does not include a free to air component which when negotiated next year will see one A-League match shown live on free to air on Saturday nights simulcast with Fox Sports.
There was no detail on expansion but, Gallop, who was sitting alongside Foxtel CEO Peter Tonagh and Fox Sports CEO Patrick Delaney, said the broadcast arrangement would see the broadcaster have a say in the final decision.
“The decisions around expansion will be ours and we can take those decisions to be anywhere but we certainly have had conversations with the gentlemen at the table about where they think expansion might be a better chance of success,” Gallop said.
“We have to factor that in. It won’t be the only factor that we look at but we’ve said from day one on the question of expansion of course we will take into account the preference of our broadcasters, but it won’t be the only factor we take into account.
“We’ve had some good early discussions about that and it is contemplated in the deal. But importantly decisions around expansion have to be the game and the game has to identify a location which can be successful but also a location which can add value to the A-League and the game generally.
FFA Chairman Steven Lowy said expansion would occur sometime during the new six-year broadcast deal which begins on July 1, 2017.
“Expansion for expansion sake is not what we are about,” he said. “But expansion that adds to the overall game that creates more value and more growth is really what we are all about and we particularly want to do that in a sustainable way, so we are going to take our time and do this properly but it certainly is contemplated to occur through this time frame.
“Expansion as everybody knows is important it is a strategic issue for us and it is clearly contemplated to occur through this deal how and when that occurs is a matter of the board to consider. Its doing some very serious studies, feasibility studies etc. and it’s very critical.”
