To see the Euro stars in training with the Socceroos...

The former Sydney man was on target in Sheffield United's 2-2 draw away to Colchester on Saturday. Carney played at 3pm and left England at 10pm with a stopover in Singapore before arriving in Melbourne this morning (Mon).

“I slept on both flights which was good. They give you caffeine tablets to keep you up for the first part of the flight, but if anyone knows me, they know I like my sleep. I feel fresh,” Carney said from the team hotel in Melbourne's CBD.

“I didn't expect first class, I expected business. I think that's why I slept all the way. Obviously I'll feel tired tonight but you always feel like that ... hopefully by tomorrow I'll feel better."

With hot weather continuing this week, Carney feels the Asian Cup experience most current Socceroos have will stand them in good stead – despite flying in from a cold European winter.

“International games are generally slower with the tempo. But the weather is an advantage to Qatar. Hopefully we can get an early goal and go from there.

“I think most of the lads have done this before [flying in late for a game]. With the Uruguay game when we qualified, we sort of played the next day. So we've got experience doing this and I'm sure we can do the job."

The former Sydney FC starlet has scored in three out of the last four games for his English club and so comes in to the game high on confidence. That confidence has been boosted by a brilliant goal in his last outing for the national team against Nigeria late last year.

Carney added that even though he's played as a left wingback in the Asian Cup and more of an attacking role at his current club Sheffield United, he wasn't sure what coach Pim Verbeek wants from him.

“I spoke to Pim once on the phone when he first got the job. But I haven't really spoke to him about the side on Wednesday, so your guess is as good as mine.”
