Hands of Stajcic for the Socceroos, says Sam Kerr

The Matildas have had a big year including the 2017 Tournament of Nations triumph and have now put their heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Brazil in Belo Horizonte in the 2016 Olympics, behind them.

Australia were already 3-0 up against China on Wednesday before stars Kyah Simon and Michelle Heyman came off the bench and Foord said there was a healthy competition for places.

“It’s exciting and fun, when we come into camp now we’re all just having fun,” The 23-year-old-said.

“We make the most of it when we play together, I think we’re just enjoying ourselves. Personally, when I think that’s happening to me I play my best football.

“The depth just keeps getting better and better and there are some good young girls coming through as well and it’s pushing all of us.

“You don’t have your spot now, there are so many good players in this squad and you don’t know who is starting. It’s always competitive and I think it reflects on why we’re doing so well.”

Kerr continues her stunning form by adding an absolute screamer to ice the game on Wednesday.

Foord, who has a close friendship with Kerr, said she never ceases to amaze her.

“She just keeps scoring goals," she said. "It’s really good to see, I’m happy for her and I think it drives the team to want to do better.

“I think the hype around her and the team is very exciting, it puts pressure on us to have to perform and it’s what Australia expects now.

“We go out there and we know how we can play, but I still think this team as more to give. We’re playing well at the moment, but we can still play better.”

Australia will play China again in Geelong on Sunday at 4.30pm.
