On Saturday, 21-year-old Velez Sarsfield fan Emanuel Alvarez was shot dead before the match against San Lorenzo in Buenos Aires and a day later a fight between fans of Boca Juniors and Huracan resulted in a Boca supporter being stabbed.

Police are yet to make any arrests in relation to the shooting incident and have appealed for further information as they continue their investigation.

Fernandez, however, refuted the notion such incidents were indicative of sporting events in Argentina, instead claiming they were "a criminal fact that has nothing to do with sport itself".

He told Radio Mitre: "There is no argument, clash or fight similar to this. The only thing we have is that somebody, a murderer, just wanted to shoot a 21-year-old guy in the chest and kill him."

Following the fighting in Huracan, police detained 183 people - nine of them under 18.

Fernandez added: "Police acted quickly and, because of that, so many people were detained.

"Unfortunately, less than 24 hours after the problem, just a few remain in police stations."
