United Maylands Junior Football Club (UMJFC), proudly sponsored by Smarter than Smoking, will kick off its first matches this Saturday, 5 May 2007 at 3.00pm. This is an important milestone for the multicultural club, compromising of children from migrant communities, which forms part of the recently launched Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) Juniors Program.
Smarter than Smoking and Football West teamed up in late 2006 to develop a pilot football program aimed at providing football opportunities and inexpensive fun for special-needs children and to people from multicultural backgrounds, particularly young indigenous players and immigrants, involved in a social atmosphere playing the world game.
From a small group of 20 friends, the squad has now expanded to more than 50 regular participants, having extended their welcome to Maylands locals and other culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) children aged 4 to 14.
The program runs under Head Coach Asefah Woldeselassie, who is a fully accredited coach who has experience administering football programs and tournaments for people in humanitarian crisis and in coordinating competitions and training programs in treacherous and adverse conditions in Africa.
Woldeselassie described the program as, “A chance for people to keep fit, have fun and build harmony between different cultures, keeping unity and showing the right direction by giving positive outlooks and discouraging anti-social behaviour, while especially working to educate about and discourage discrimination.”
The players strips will be presented by Football West this Saturday prior to the commencement of games against East Fremantle Soccer Club 14s and Hamersley Rovers Soccer Club 10s team in a couple of friendly encounters.
“Today’s matches represent a milestone in our CaLD initiative. The project is one which we have supported from the outset, and I am delighted to see the representative teams taking the field in their first scheduled games,” said Mr. Garry Chandler, CEO Football West.
“We will continue to broaden the scope of the initiative, in an effort to support the positive health and community integration benefits that the program brings. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the local CaLD and club coordinators, and the DSR, for their ongoing support for the program,” said Mr. Chandler.
Football West welcomes members of the WA football community and the general public to Gibbney Reserve, Maylands to be a part of the next important step in the Football West Outreach for Diversity Program. The strips will be presented at 2.40pm, prior to the games which kick-off at 3:00pm.
