PREMIER DIVISION

Inglewood United (6) v Wanneroo City (0)

Inglewood United recorded their second consecutive three point haul as they
demolished lowly Wanneroo City 6-0 in the Football West Match of the Week at
Clipsal Stadium.

Wanneroo City has now conceded a staggering 36 goals in the last six matches
and it will take a turn around of epic proportions for them to retain their
Premier League status for 2008.

Bobby Despotovski was in fine form for his side, having a hand in one goal
and converting a trade mark free kick in the first half. He was ably
assisted by a brace from Kevin Griffiths and singles to Mladen Kovacevic and
Greg Sharland before a last minute own goal rubbed further salt into the
Wanneroo wounds.

The match began in sunshine and both sides had chances to take an early lead
in what was an open and attacking affair.

Despotovski was denied by a smart block from Wanneroo keeper Kevin Millar,
the first of what would be a string of fine saves before Daniel Niederberger
skimmed the cross bar with a curling effort from a Despotovski pull back.

Wanneroo threatened as Craig Cheeseman drifted a header wide and then saw
his effort from an angle superbly blocked by Taseski as he raced off his
line.

But with the game delicately poised, Inglewood took the lead after a smart
Despotovski ball released Sharland whose inch perfect cross found the head
of Kovacevic, who made no mistake from six yards.

The Wanneroo heads immediately went down and they found themselves a further
goal behind after 26 minutes when Despotovski curled in a low free kick from
20 yards following a professional foul by Dan Brown to halt Griffiths on the
edge of the area.

It was soon 3-0 to Inglewood and the small crowd on hand was sensing a
thrashing was on the cards.

Niederberger showed great tenacity to chase the ball down the left
touchline, beating his man and crossing in from the corner flag, where there
didn’t look to be much danger until Sharland did fantastically well to flick
a header from the near post for Griffiths to smash home from close range.

Cheeseman was the only threat for Wanneroo and he saw an effort brilliantly
parried away by Taseski after shimmying past the defence on the edge of the
box and another went wide after capitalizing on some lax defending from
United.

Millar was called into action again as half time approached, producing two
outstanding blocks to deny Sharland and replicating the effort on Dean
Applegren as the half time whistle sounded.

The spectators barely had time to find their seats after half time before it
was 4-0 as Sharland finally got the goal his performance deserved. A superb
cross in from Jason Colli found the big man who directed his header into the
top corner from the penalty spot.

Two minutes later and this time it was Niederberger who provided the
ammunition bu Sharland could only watch his close range header cannon off
the bar with Millar saving the follow up effort from Griffiths.

The warnings were not heeded though and it was 5-0 on 49 minutes after the
Wanneroo defence failed to properly clear the ball, Griffiths chesting and
volleying over the keeper from 20 yards.

A torrential downpour then rolled across the Clipsal Stadium making
conditions difficult for both sides as Despotovski withdrew himself from the
action to control the match from the sidelines, receiving a warm round of
applause from the appreciative supporters.

Without their number 10, Inglewood took their foot off the pedal as Wanneroo
continued to battle but couldn’t find a way to stick one into the back of
the net.

Applegren was again denied by a Millar block on 70 minutes as Griffiths
curled what could have been his hat-trick wide after a fine run and pass
from Jason Colli found the midfielder free in the area.

With three minutes to go, Applegren put the icing on the cake, intercepting
the ball near half way and launching a counter attack. With Wanneroo caught
short at the back, Applegren stormed into the box only to see the keeper
again block his effort but only into the leg of Mark Donnelly with the ball
ricocheting into the net.

An important three points for Inglewood that sees them back in the mix of
the middle table clubs whilst a despondent Wanneroo must regroup for the
visit of glamour side Perth SC in the next round in what could potentially
be a goal fest.

Stirling Lions (1) v ECU Joondalup (0)

Stirling Lions secured a vital three points in the context of their season,
with a hard fought 1-0 victory over ECU Joondalup at Macedonia Park today.

An 80th minute header from defender Michael Pugliese sealed the win in a
scrappy affair in wet and windy conditions.

A barrage of torrential rain before the match made the surface difficult for
the players with many losing their footing in a tight opening to the half.

Stirling were on top of the contest looking the more likely to score and
they had their first chance after 15 minutes when a great touch from Vas
Kalogeracos setup strike partner Andy Brown who cannoned his shot into the
post.

The match became an error riddled encounter with both sides struggling to
create any clear cut chances however youngster Danny Richman worked
desperately to bring the game to life and he setup a wonderful opportunity
for Daniel Micevski on 33 minutes. Micevski’s tame effort fell into the arms
of Joondalup goalkeeper Aleks Vrteski.

After a disappointing first half, the visitors looked promising in the
second half however the wet surface was still causing havoc for both sides.

Youngster Micevski, was finding himself in great positions and along with
Vas Kalogeracos could have given the home side the lead but both could only
find the hands of Aleks Vrteski in the Joondalup goal.

Half time substitute Scott Blackmore made his presence felt for the visitors
with a 30 metre rocket, only denied by a fantastic fingertip save from Lions
keeper Phil Straker.

With neither side giving an inch, it was left to a defender to settle the
tie with Micheal Pugliese rising high from a Ludovic Boi corner to knock in
the winner, bouncing his header past Vrteski.

Stirling pushed hard for a second in the final ten minutes but the one goal
was enough to give Micky Lyons’ side a well earned win, after fielding a
side missing key players Steve Hesketh, Phil Arnold and David Dugdale.

The Lions head south next weekend for a tough battle against an underrated
Fremantle Spirit while Joondalup will look to bounce back at home to
Sorrento.

Cockburn (2) v Western Knights (1)

A late strike from Josh Kamaz has given a ten man Cockburn a 2-1 win over
the Western Knights at Dalmatinac Park today.

After being reduced to ten men when substitute Marko Aleksic was somewhat
dubiously given his marching orders with 30 minutes to play, Kamaz hammered
home with 15 minutes remaining to give Cockburn their 3rd league win on the
trot.

It was a scrappy opening, in which both sides had opportunities to take the
lead with Dino Pacella being forced to make some quality saves, most notably
from Jon Higgins who had a long range shot tipped over.

Cockburn were dangerous from set pieces early, with John Mirco coming close
after a cleverly worked free kick.

The visitors took the lead just after the half hour through Andrija Jukic,
coming off two goals against Sorrento, Jukic fired home after some good work
down the right hand side.

Five minutes before the break, proceedings were level, when in-form John
Mirco ran past the defenders and sent an unstoppable shot into the net from
inside the box.

The second half started in similar fashion to the first with the best early
chance falling to Jon Mathers, who shot narrowly wide.

After 55 minutes, Aleksic was brought on to replace an injured Michael Mirco
and he was given his marching orders in the 63rd minute after a misplaced
challenge.

Down to ten men, this served to lift Cockburn and on 74 minutes some good
work from Paul Natale gave John Mirco the chance to pass to Kamaz, who went
past one defender and shot into the net to the ecstacy of the home crowd.

There were chances for Cockburn to finish the game, with both Mirco and Gio
Di Bartolo wasting opportunities to increase the lead.

For the Knights there was still time for one last assault on the Cockburn
goal, however, the defence led superbly by Jason Godfrey held firm for what
may be a season defining win.

After the match, an excited Cockburn coach Scott Miller was quick to praise
his side’s character.

“That was a real test of our character today, we stuck to the task well and
I’m happy for the boys.” Miller said.

Next week, Cockburn play Swan IC while the Knights play host to Floreat
Athena.

Sorrento (4) v Swan I.C (1)

Gulls charge home to take the points

A four goal second half blitz from Sorrento earned them a 4-1 home victory against Swan IC at Percy Doyle reserve this afternoon in round ten of the Football West Premier League.

In wet and windy conditions it was the visitors who opened brightly, Anthony McStea’s free kick fell to Brendan Knox on the left hand side of the box, his curling shot flew inches past the post.

Sorrento went close on five minutes Gary Lynn shot saved well by Cory Hugo, but it was the visitors who were ahead in the 10th minute, McStea’s cross fell kindly to Justin Hugo who fired low past Anthony Cochrane.

The Swans continued to dominate and Knox fired over from close-range and Cochrane saved well from Rory Mouttet. It should have been 2-0 on 20 minutes Knox somehow blazing over from point blank range.

Sorrento began to get into the game and from Stuart Banks free kick Steven McDonald headed over and after good work from Jared Love on the right Brodie Martin fired over from close-range.

The Swans went into the break 1-0 to the good although Chris Boyle's shot was only inches past the post on the stroke of half time.

The home side began the second half well and were level on 55 minutes Martin’s low strike from the edge of the box beat Cory Hugo low to his right. There was tension in the coach’s boxes and Sorrento Coach Steve Neville was sent to the stands by referee Paul Anderson for arguing a decision, but this seemed to lift the Gulls, and they were ahead in the 68th minute. The Swans didn’t close down on the edge of their penalty area and Boyle’s stunning shot flew into the top corner, much to the delight of the home faithful.

The Gulls were on top and five minutes later it was 3-1, Love was the provider, his run and cross from the right was stabbed home by substitute Dejan Gurovski. The visitors were almost handed a lifeline when a mix up between McDonald and Cochrane, with the McDonald’s back pass heading towards goal but the alert Lynn cleared the ball off the line.

Moments later the points were made safe with the goal of the match, Lewis Flatt’s turn and shot from the right side of the penalty area flew into the top corner with Cory Hugo stranded.

FOOTBALL WEST STATE LEAGUE
DIVISION ONE

Dianella White Eagles (3) V Canning City (3)

Dianella White Eagles played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Canning City in
the Football West State First Division at Dianella Reserve on Saturday, June
23.

Both sides had their chances to take all three points as an entertaining
five goal first half was followed by a tighter second half between two of
the leagues top sides.

Five minutes in Canning opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Paul
Van Dongen had been brought down inside the box; it was Danny Trevisol who
calmly converted the penalty.

Dianella tied the game in the 13th minute through Michael Mayne, who knocked
in unmarked from 18 yards after David Moschilla squared the ball.
The home side claimed the lead seven minutes later through Paul Hickey, who
headed firmly past the ‘keeper at the far post, following a corner from the
left side.

The game continued to be played at a frenetic pace as Canning brought the
score to 2-2 in the 26th minute through the experienced Van Dongen, who
capitalised by tapping into an unguarded net after Dianella shot-stopper
Pedro Pavez had spilt Trevisol’s shot.

After the visitors squandered two good opportunities to take the lead, it
was the White Eagles who did so eight minutes out from half-time through Ray
Rose, who headed in following a cross from the right wing that the City
defenders should have cleared easily.

The second half slowed down as the pouring rain began to have an impact on
the game, however, Trevisol was just inches away from tying the scores once
again in the 60th minute when his shot was spectacularly cleared off the
line by Goran Radinovic after the Canning player had done all the hard work
but his tame shot allowed the defender to clear.

Two minutes later Simon Versacio levelled the scores after he picked up the
ball on 35 yards and was allowed to run forward unchallenged and beat the
‘keeper, taking the score to 3-3.

Aaron Moschopoulos sent the Dianella fans into raptures in the 85th minute
when he shot past the Canning ‘keeper and into the net, but the referee
disallowed the goal and awarded Moschopoulos with a yellow card for a
deliberate handball.

City thought the three points were theirs when Dave Mickler was brought to
ground inside the penalty box and the visitors were awarded with a spot-kick
in the 92nd minute. However Trevisol took an uncharacteristically poor
penalty which allowed Pavez to save well, resulting in the match finished in
a hard-fought and enthralling 3-3 draw.

Canning coach Frank Longstaff was happy to pick up a point against difficult
opposition.

“I’m really pleased with the result. I thought we deserved to win it but
just that penalty in the last minute didn’t go our way. It was a fairly even
game but I thought we edged it and were better all round and deserved to
win,” Longstaff said.

“We just have to keep the run going now. That’s 10 games undefeated now and
we didn’t loose in the last 6 last season so that’s 16 games and I can’t
fault that. It’s brilliant, absolutely brilliant.”
