Match of the Week Preview

Inglewood United vs. Wanneroo City

Wanneroo City travel to Clipsal Stadium this Saturday to tackle Inglewood United in the Football West State Premier League Match of the Week.

Inglewood will be fancying their chances to pick up another valuable three point haul which would see them move into the mid-table group and confirm their League status for the 2007 season. Bobby Despotovski’s side are coming off a solid win against Fremantle Spirit last weekend and were also the beneficiaries of the decision to dock Western Knights three points for their Round One clash, so confidence is high in the camp.

Wanneroo have been in turmoil since the opening day of the season and under new custodian Mike Brazil, the results are still yet to come. Thrashed 7-2, 6-0 and 5-1 in the previous three rounds, the City defence has come under intense pressure and this is where the side will need to lift it’s game if it is to have any hope of picking up points and escaping the relegation zone.

The match is a 3.00pm kick off at The Clipsal Stadium, Inglewood.

Sorrento Soccer Club vs. Swan IC

Sorrento are back on home soil on Saturday at 3.00pm with Carlo Scali’s Swan IC visiting Percy Doyle Reserve in round ten of the Football West Premier League.

Sorrento has struggled to send out a consistent starting line up this season with injuries and suspensions hampering Steve Neville’s selection but they will hope to kick start their season with a victory against the Swans on Saturday. The Gulls will be without Glen Thomas who was sent off in last weeks 2-6 loss at Western Knights, but will look too new imports Gary Boyle and Gary Lynn to give them the lift. Sorrento will hope to keep the Swans at bay and former Motherwell defender Steve McDonald will have to marshal the defence along with Lynn. Up front Todd Harnwell and Boyle will hope to give the Gulls faithful a few goals.

The Swans let a two goal lead slip last week in their 3-3 draw at ECU Joondalup, and will be without David Perich who was sent in the match, for the Gulls clash. Dom Ando will return after missing last week and Scali will hope to have David Foster, Geoff Mason and Danyal Bennett recover from injury for the big clash. The Swans need the points to move clear of the bottom of the table but with Sorrento also needing a victory it has all the hallmarks of a cracking game.

Perth Soccer Club vs. Fremantle Spirit

Perth Soccer Club, fresh from their 5-0 trashing of Stirling lions last week, entertain Mark Wingell’s Fremantle Spirit at Dorrien Gardens this Saturday in round ten of the Football West Premier League.

It was a clinical performance from Graham Normanton’s side last week with all their big guns firing. The 2007 McInerney Ford Night Series champions are one point behind leaders Floreat Athena and will have to be wary of Fremantle Spirit who pushed Athena all the way in round eight. Perth will be without Nikita Rukavytsya who is away with Perth Glory but Barry Wood has found his goal scoring touch in the last couple of games. The midfield is the key to Perth’s game and Robbie Puca, Gary Faria, Scott Bulloch and Todd Howarth will hope to continue their sparkling form from Sunday.

Fremantle have surprised many sides this season and are sitting in seventh spot with 12 points, but are coming off a disappointing 1-3 loss at home to Inglewood United last week. It’s a fairly young Spirit side with Mark Darby and Jason Barrera performing well, with the experience coming from keeper Steve Grant, along with Alex Christie and Tom Straker, who have formed a solid partnership at the back. The lively forward line of Callum Roberts and Sebastian Booysen has given the Spirit the route to goal this season they will hope to continue this on Saturday.

FOOTBALL WEST STATE LEAGUE

Division One

Match of the Week

Dianella White Eagles vs. Canning City

Dianella White Eagles host Canning City in a vital match-up between two of the powerhouse teams of the Football West State First Division on Saturday, 23 June at Dianella Reserve.

Dianella will be desperate to bounce back after two straight defeats, coming from Ashfield and Mandurah City. The White Eagles have slipped to third on the ladder, sitting three points behind League leaders Mandurah. The Jimmy Pearson coached side know that they can’t keep giving up points if they want to claim the First Division title.

Injured Dianella striker Jon Greenwood views Saturday’s match as vital to the clubs season. “After a disappointing game against Ashfield this weekend’s game against Canning is massive for us and we will be looking at taking no less than three points from it,” he said.

“The Boys will be working on things during the week and I am confident they have what it takes to get the job done. Also being at home in front of our home supporters who have been fantastic all year will give the boys an extra lift on the day.”

Canning have pleasantly surprised most pundits this season with an impressive run of form that sees them sit second, trailing Mandurah by just one point. Frank Longstaff’s side boasts the best defence in the league, having conceded just eight goals from their nine games. Goal scoring has been a problem for City this year however, scoring only 19 times in League games, compared to Dianella’s 32 goals from the same amount of matches. The southern-suburbs side will rely on the experience of brothers Paul and Mick Van Dongen to lead Canning’s talented side.

The match at Dianella Reserve commences at 3.00pm.

PREMIER DIVISION

Match of the Week Preview

Fremantle United vs. Murdoch University

Fremantle United will be keen to consolidate their position as one of the leagues premier sides when they travel to a dangerous Murdoch University side on Sunday, June 24 at Winthrop Reserve in The Loans Café Amateur Premier League.

After winning their first eight games of the League season, Fremantle United could only manage a 2-2 draw against CN Canning International last weekend. Although they still comfortably lead Group A, Shamrock Rovers now sit on top of the combined table with a perfect record so far this season. The experience of Fremantle has contributed heavily to their superb start to the 2007 season. Former State Premier League Golden Boot winner David Onoforo leads the frontline for Fremantle, while veteran Jason Smith is still a dominant force in midfield. Felim Rugel has been the dominant striker in the Premier League this season, and Coach Rob Pagnoni will be hoping that his good form continues.

Despite their solid early season form, Murdoch already sits ten points behind leaders Shamrock on both the combined and Group B ladders. University will also be desperate to bounce back, following a disappointing performance in their 0-0 draw at Maccabi last weekend. Murdoch captain Michael Jennings always puts in a high quality performance but he will need to be at the top of his game to have an impact against the strong Fremantle midfield.

The match at Winthrop Reserve commences at 3.00pm.
