Ceyzac tendered his resignation following a meeting on Sunday with Sebastien Bazin, a representative of PSG's main shareholder, Colony Capital, and coach Paul Le Guen.

That meeting was convened following the Parisians' 3-0 loss at Caen, their fourth defeat on the trot which left them in 18th place and three points from safety with four matches remaining.

PSG have now appointed Michel Moulin as director of sport but Ceyzac told French newspaper L'Equipe he wanted Mourinho for the job.

"I thought about approaching Jose Mourinho," he said.

"I had been in touch with him, he was out of the job and wasn't looking for an enormous amount of money. We made contact but it was too late."

Other names proposed by Cayzac to help the club in their battle against the drop included former Liverpool and Lyon boss Gerard Houllier, Philippe Lucas, Yannick Noah and even the coach of the France national handball team, Daniel Costantini.

The 66-year-old admitted he had even considered star striker Pauleta for a coaching role, saying: "I wanted Pauleta to be player-coach for the last four games of the season, but I didn't have time to propose the idea."

Ceyzac also revealed the decision to appoint Moulin was a choice he "had no part in".
