Former Socceroo Craig Foster has claimed there's a "large amount" of Australian coaches who could do a better job than Bert van Marwijk, including out-of-work Tony Popovic.
Speaking on The World Game podcast, Craig Foster wasn't impressed by van Marwijk's first two matches in charge, calling the loss against Norway "hard to watch" and the performance against Colombia "scrappy".
While the Socceroos were embarassed in their first match under the Dutch coach, losing 4-1 in Oslo, they appeared to regroup against Colombia and secured a 0-0 draw against the 13th ranked nation.
However Foster believes van Marwijk isn't going to "contribute anything" to Australian football.
"He is an accomplished coach," Foster said. "He's an experienced coach. That's all fine. I don't think he's going to bring us anything new. I don't believe he's going to contribute anything.
"He'll be getting a couple of million dollars to go there and play what is a very ordinary system.
"And I believe there is a large amount of Australian coaches who could do exactly the same thing equally as well - if not better.
"Tony Popovic could do a better job. Our top local coaches have more variation in their coaching."
Van Marwijk now has two months to further prepare his side - hampered by the end of their respective club campaigns - before further friendlies against Czech Republic and Hungary in June.
However Foster - who was an outspoken proponent of continuing the 'attacking style' set out in FFA's national curriculum - wasn't optimistic about the side's chances going in to the World Cup.
"It's very different for the players it's going to take time for them to get suited to different instructions and a much more reactive way of playing," he said.
"I see a team currently trying not to lose. We can make Norway look great, we can make Colombia look great in the second half, because we're not seeking to disrupt them."
