Top Aussie FA Cup Moments - #1

Craig Johnston
10 May 1986
Liverpool 3 Everton 1, FA Cup Final

While yesterday’s number two on our countdown - Joe Marston’s 1954 FA Cup final appearance - ended in defeat for the Aussies, in the mid-eighties another Aussie was given a crack at Wembley glory.

Craig Johnston, who was raised in NSW’s Newcastle, took to the field with Liverpool to take on fierce local rivals Everton in the 1986 FA Cup final.

While Marston was a rare foreign player in the 1954 final, the 1986 final signaled the first to feature a team without a single English player. That team was Johnston’s Liverpool who were searching to complete the double after winning the English First Division.

Despite Liverpool's non-English contingent, it was one of England’s finest who gave Everton the lead within half an hour as star striker Gary Lineker scored to give Everton a 1-0 half-time lead.

Everton’s control of the game continued until just before the hour mark, but the blue half of Liverpool could not find a second goal and duly paid the price. Liverpool’s own star striker, Ian Rush, leveled the scores and the momentum shifted.

Just six minutes later, on the 63 minute mark, the Aussie affectionately known as Skippy by fans gave Liverpool the lead. A cross from the left deflected into the path of Johnston, who had the easiest of finishes with the goal at his mercy.

In the final 10 minutes, Ian Rush grabbed his second to seal a 3-1 victory and an FA Cup winners medal for Johnston.

Unsurprisingly, Johnston later named his pivotal goal as the greatest moment in his career. And, for us, it was the greatest FA Cup moment involving an Aussie ever.
