Western Sydney caretaker Hayden Foxe has thrown his hat in the ring to be Wanderers permanent head coach.
The 11-time Socceroo has been installed as interim boss following Tony Popovic’s resignation to take up the job as Turkish club Karabukspor’s head coach.
Foxe, 40, has been a Wanderers assistant coach since 2015, while he has previously experience in similar roles with Melbourne Heart.
The former West Ham and Ajax Amsterdam defender, who had an injury cursed career as a player, said he’d be using his caretaker period as an audition.
“They wouldn’t have put me in this position if they didn’t respect my views and if I didn’t have the backing of the players and the board and the administration,” Foxe said.
Wanderers 'flabbergasted' by coach applications
Foxe, who is originally from Sydney’s west, added he’d be putting his name forward for the job permanently.
“I’m not going to say no,” Foxe said.
“It’s a privilege. This is is my fourth season at this organisation.
“I know how the club is run. I know what the expectations are.
“I know the community. I grew up here as a boy. I know what the west represents.”
Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said the club wouldn’t put a timeframe on Foxe to prove himself.
“There’s no time limit,” Tsatsimas said.
“We’re going to take our time to make the right decision.
“Hayden has every confidence that we have in him. He’s been part of us. He’s an outstanding coach.”
“We’re solidifying our group and we’ll be working through what we need to do in the coming weeks to ensure we’re in the right shape for the coming season.”
