At the conclusion of Round Four of the Victorian Premier League, Richmond and Dandenong remain the only unbeaten teams on top of the table as they both picked up 1-0 wins on the weekend to give them a two point cushion over third placed Green Gully.
Action kicked for this latest round on Friday night as the Richmond Eagles hosted the Sunshine Georgies at Kevin Bartlett Reserve. In a game that never reached any great heights, it was a sole Dimitri Tsiaras header that separated the two teams.
Dandenong Thunder maintained their impressive start to the season with a 1-0 victory over defending VPL champions, Altona Magic on Saturday night. Playing in front of their home fans for the first time this season, a Veton Korcari strike was all that was needed for the Thunder to take all three points and maintain their unbeaten start to the season.
In Saturday's other match, Hume City played host to an in-form Heidelberg United site at Broadmeadows Valley Park, with the match ending in a 1-1 draw. In a match where both teams played open and attack minded football it was some poor finishing that had them wondering what could have been. The two goals for the game came within a minute of each other early in the first half with Alfonso Opazo and Denis Alilovic getting on the scoresheet for Hume City and Heidelberg United respectively.
Sunday afternoon saw the clash of two of the league's biggest clubs as the Melbourne Knights travelled to Bob Jane Stadium to take on South Melbourne. And it was the home fans that went home the happiest as South Melbourne ran out 2-1 winners thanks to goals from Fernando De Moraes and Vaughan Coveney, who scored his 98th goal for the club. For the visitors, Mate Dugandzic scored their only goal of the match as they slumped to their second loss of the season.
Sunday also saw the Preston Lions host the Green Gully Cavaliers at BT Connor Reserve. Coming off a last start thrashing at the hands of arch rivals, South Melbourne, Preston held their own in a 0-0 draw to give them their first points of the season. Standout performances from the respective goalkeepers were the highlight of the afternoon as Damir Salcin (Preston) and Steven Tilovski (Green Gully) put on a goalkeeping exhibition in front of a 1,000 strong crowd.
The round concluded on Monday night with Oakleigh bouncing back from consecutive losses to defeat the Whittlesea Zebras 1-0 at Epping Stadium. The loss keeps Whittlesea at the foot of the table and makes them the only team without a point after four rounds of the season.
