A brace from Kylian Mbappe helped France to victory and showed they mean business as they prepare to face the winner of Uruguay and Portugal.

France started on top with Mbappe winning a penalty and Antoine Griezmann converting inside 15 minutes. However, while France were on top Angel Di Maria struck back with a blistering strike from 30 yards.

Fireworks erupted after the break with Argentina taking the lead with Lionel Messi's shot deflecting off Gabriel Mercado to put them in the lead before Benjamin Pavard struck a Goal-of-the-Tournament contender on the half volley.

Kylian Mbappe finished the match off with two splendid goals as France tore Argentina apart.

FRANCE

Hugo Lloris - 5

Helpless to stop Di Maria's blistering strike on 41 minutes and Mercado's deflected goal caught him off guard.

Benjamin Pavard - 7

Read the game very well when Argentina began to threaten on the right flank, dealing with crosses and making numerous clearances. Kept Mercado onside when Messi's shot deflected off the goal scorer. A blistering strike levelled it for France at 2-2.

Samuel Umtiti - 6.5

Showed strength and power to deny Messi and co. any opportunity to crack the French defence. Put pressure on Messi as he shot shortly after the break, but it wasn't enough as it deflected off Mercado and into the net.

Raphael Varane - 6.5

Did well to keep France's line strong and intact and shut out virtually all opposition on his right side of defence in the first half.

Lucas Hernandez - 7.5

Did his job defending a throw-in on the right flank but unfortunately his teammates didn't follow suit as Di Maria struck from 30 yards unopposed. His cross bounced to the back post for Pavard to power home for the equaliser.

Paul Pogba - 7.5

A long raking pass set Mbappe free to win a free-kick on the edge of the area which he sprayed over the bar. Simple long passes cutting Argentina open was Pogba's bread and butter. In the second half he released Hernandez, who crossed to Matuidi, whose shot was blocked but picked up and scored by Mbappe.

Ngolo Kante - 7.5

Without him Paul Pogba wouldn't have the game that he did, although he put absolutely no pressure on Di Maria when he brought Argentina level from 30 yards out.

Blaise Matuidi - 7.5

Happy to soak up pressure and use his pace to jet forward and offer another option in attack, knowing full well Paul Pogba and Ngolo Kante had his back. Delivered a sumptuous ball to Hernandez who crossed for Pavard's equaliser.

Antoine Griezmann - 7

Hit the crossbar from a free-kick just outside the box to give France their first sniff of the match. Opened the scoring for France from the penalty spot and was instrumental to Mbappe's fourth goal.

Olivier Giroud - 6

Didn't have a bad start, getting some flick-ons for his teammates and throwing himself about. Slid the ball in for Mbappe who scored France's fourth.

Kylian Mbappe - 9

Showed his pace by drifting centrally and taking on the slower legs of Javier Mascherano and Nicolas Otamendi through the middle. Won the penalty for France in the 11th minute and put them 3-2 with some close control in the box and finishing with his left foot. Then wrapped it up for France with his second and Les Bleus' fourth.

SUBS

Clorentin Tolisso - 6

Brought on for Matuidi with 15 minutes to go. Kept things clean and kept the result intact.

Nabil Fekir - N/A

Brought on for Antoine Griezmann.

Floriant Thauvin - N/A

ARGENTINA

Franco Armani - 4

Dived the wrong way as Griezmann slotted his penalty into the bottom left corner. Distribution and goal kicks were off-par, giving away possession sometimes in Argentina's half. Not quick enough to react to Mbappe's shot.

Gabriel Mercado - 4.5

Managed to find space behind Hernandez to the runs of Lionel Messi and Cristian Pavon. Messi's shot deflected off him and put Argentina into the lead.

Nicolas Tagliafico - 3

Poor communication led to Mbappe picking up the loose ball and darting forward from inside his own half, which led to him winning a penalty for France. Almost gave away another penalty for a foul on Mbappe. Tried to clear Hernandez's cross with the outside of his foot only to miss and let Pavard smash home France's third.

Nicolas Otamendi - 3

The defensive line and the midfield had poor communication leaving them open to counter-attacks and simple balls over the top.

Marcos Rojo - 2

Couldn't handle the pace of Mbappe as he brought him down for a penalty in the 11th minute and received a yellow card. An overall poor match and was replaced at half-time by Federico Fazio.

Javier Mascherano - 5

Brought down Mbappe in a dangerous position, and Griezmann hit the crossbar from the following set-piece. Picked up as the first half wore on but the second half was all France as Argentina had to go for goals.

Ever Banega - 4.5

A few awkward moments early on - he and Tagliafico needed some time to get on the same wavelength. A few good tackles but France's central defence was watertight, preventing him from pulling strings.

Angel Di Maria - 5.5

A poor start to the match but a spectacular strike levelled the scores at 1-1 five minutes before half-time.

Enzo Perez - 5

Opened up a first-half chance in the box, lifting the ball over Hernandez for Mercado, who couldn't deliver a good ball.

Lionel Messi - 5

Very involved in the first half but did nothing with the ball once he had it. He had no out-and-out striker to play off in the match and it gave Argentina no bite. Worked some space for himself to get a shot away, that deflected off Mercado and in.

Christian Pavon - 4

Poor deliveries and decision making on the right-hand side. He was outsmarted by Lucas Hernandez.

SUBS

Federico Fazio - 3

Came on for Marcos Rojo at half-time and Argentinian hearts in mouths as he almost threw their 3-2 lead away with a poor backpass to Armani.

Sergio Aguero - 4

Subbed on for Enzo Perez with 25 minutes to go. Pulled one back for Argentina in stoppage time.

Maximiliano Meza - 5

Arrived for Christian Pavon with 15 minutes to go.
