LYON, March 22 (Champions League) - Lyon striker Fred has been handed a three-match ban by UEFA for elbowing Roma centre-back Cristian Chivu during a Champions League last-16 tie earlier this month.
The Brazil international's suspension will apply to the next three UEFA club competition matches he is eligible to play in.
Les Gones, who were eliminated from the competition by the Italians, are likely to be in the Champions League next season as they are currently 16 points clear at the top of Ligue 1.
The incident, which was not noticed by match officials on the night, occurred in the second half of the second leg, a game won 2-0 by Roma on March 6 to secure a 2-0 aggregate victory.
The 23-year-old can appeal against the decision.
