Jeggo was withdrawn from the 23-man Socceroos squad to face Iraq and UAE in 2018 World Cup qualifiers this week, replaced by Nathan Burns over the weekend.

The uncapped 25-year-old felt his glute when he went to take off at Sturm Graz training on Thursday, undergoing scans which showed a tear, ruling him out for three to four weeks.

The injury came only days after Australia boss Ange Postecoglou publicly praised Jeggo’s form and hinted the Austria-based midfielder could be in line for his international debut.

“I was really looking forward to that, having been called up to the previous two camps and sampling it all,” Jeggo told FourFourTwo.

“It’s disappointing in the last minute that it gets taken away from you, but that’s football. These things happen.

“It’s obviously disappointing and frustrating but I’ve been lucky not to have too many (injuries) recently.”

Irrespective of Postecoglou's praise, Jeggo said he had always been targeting his Socceroos debut in the upcoming qualifiers.

“I recall after finishing the Thailand game I wanted to go back to my club, work really hard and try to continue to play as well as I can," Jeggo said.

“I wanted to try to get myself called up for these two games and hopefully take the next step and push for game-time and try and make an impact on the team, having not got off the bench in the previous games.

“It’s disappointing but it’s still a big year ahead and it’s not a long-term injury.

“I just need to get myself back fit and firing, finish the season strongly and see where it takes me.”

The former Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United man acknowledged Postecoglou’s words were a significant compliment.

“It’s always nice to hear those words,” Jeggo said.

“Regardless of if Ange came out and said that, it was in my mind of what I wanted to do.

“It’s nice to be called up and involved, but as a player you want to be playing and representing your country.

“That was my aim for these two qualifiers.

“Ange mentioning it, reinforced it and it was nice to hear but obviously it wasn’t to be this time.”

Jeggo had never suffered a glute issue before and has been fortunate with soft muscle strains previously.

He is optimistic he’ll overcome the setback long-term.

“Having missed out on the Socceroos during the international break gives me a good couple of weeks to try and get fit so I don’t miss too many games for my club which is a positive,” Jeggo said.

“I’m hopeful if it responds well to everything it might be a bit quicker than four weeks but obviously I don’t want to rush it and risk the chance of re-injuring it.

“It’s never nice being injured but it’s not a long-term injury.

“I can’t complain, just get my head down and do everything properly.”
