AUSTRALIAN Shane Lowry aimed a punch at a Carlisle fan after missing the decisive penalty in Leeds' 6-5 spotkick defeat in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy semi-final overnight.
The tie had ended level on aggregate after Leeds fought back from their 2-1 first-leg deficit to win 3-2 in Carlisle.
So the game went to penalties with both sides missing once before it went to sudden death, with Aussie midfielder Neil Kilkenny converting, before Lowry saw his shot decisively saved by Carlisle's Adam Collin.
It set off chaotic scenes as Carlisle fans invaded the pitch before goading fall-guy Lowry, who responded angrily and had to be escorted off by his teammates.
Earlier in the season whilst on loan at Plymouth, Lowry got into an altercation with Argyle fans as frustration boiled over after an ordinary run.
Elsewhere overnight, Scott McDonald made his debut for Middlesbrough, starting in their 2-1 win over Barnsley in England's Championship.
The Aussie striker began the contest impressively and had an early chance well saved by Barnsley's Luke Steele.
Boro led 2-0 at the break thanks to goals from Chris Killen and Gary O'Neil, but Barnsley fought back in the second-half although McDonald tried to stop that when he raced in and curled an effort just wide.
In the end, McDonald failed to get on the scoresheet but made a good debut with his movement causing Barnsley plenty of headaches.
Fellow Aussie Brad Jones was back for Boro while Rhys Williams wasn't involved, with the latter set to be sidelined for some time with a pelvic problem.
Elsewhere, Mark Schwarzer kept a clean sheet but didn't have too much to do as Fulham coasted past Burnley 3-0 at Craven Cottage in the Premier League.
Back to the Championship, Nick Carle started and played 81 minutes as Crystal Palace slipped up 1-0 at home to Swansea, while Adam Federici helped Reading continue their good run with a 2-1 win over Plymouth.
In League One, Dean Heffernan missed Huddersfield's 0-0 draw at Brighton due to a thigh niggle picked up on the weekend, while Gareth Edds was a 24th minute sub as Tranmere won 1-0 at Gillingham.
In League Two, Aussie keeper Dean Bouzanis was beaten four times as Northampton thrashed Accrington Stanley 4-0, while Aaron Downes scored but had to be replaced at half-time with a worrying knee injury as Chesterfield beat Port Vale 2-1.
Elsewhere in England's fourth tier, Chris Herd put in a full shift as Lincoln drew 1-1 at Darlington and Shane Cansdell-Sherriff played a full game helping Shrewsbury defeat Barnet 2-0.
