The Toffees, who haven't won in the league since early November, had taken an early lead through Diniyar Bilyaletdinov before Brum responded through Seb Larsson.

Everton were dominant early following Bilyaletdinov's early strike, with Cahill setting up Louis Saha for what appeared to be the second for Everton, only for the goal to be disallowed for a dubious offside.

Minutes later, the Australian midfielder hit a left-foot drive narrowly over Joe Hart's bar as Everton mounted the pressure.

But Larsson equalised on 22 minutes, before Everton tried to reassert themselves with Cahill going close with an early second-half header.

Cahill toiled hard all afternoon while Neill produced a reasonably assured display in defence.

Elsewhere overnight, Mark Bresciano put in a full shift helping Palermo rocket up to seventh with a 1-0 win over Siena in Italy's Serie A.

Bresciano, who scored against AC Milan last week, sent an early chance over, before pouncing on an under-hit backpass only to see his effort saved by Siena stopper Gianluca Curci.

Edison Cavani got the winner for Palermo, although it might have been more when Bresciano set up Fabrizio Miccoli, who failed with his shot after it bobbled at the crucial moment.

In Scotland's Premier League, Scott McDonald missed a few chances as Celtic slipped up again, losing 2-1 to Hearts in the capital.

After sending an early drive well high, McDonald hit the post with a close-range header from Barry Robson's 21st minute corner, only for the rebound to fall perfectly to Georgios Samaras to open the scoring.

But Hearts equalised from the spot through Michael Stewart after Celtic defender Gary Caldwell was sent off.

With scores level, McDonald did well to rob Jose Goncalves on 61 minutes, but Samaras wasted the chance. McDonald was substituted a few minutes later.

And Celtic would be made to pay for their misses, with Algerian defender Ismael Bouzid scoring the winner for Hearts on 76 minutes.

Staying in the UK, in England's Championship, Brad Jones and Rhys Williams played full games for Middlesbrough as they lost 2-0 to northern rivals Newcastle.

Jones had an awkward afternoon, with an error of judgment for Newcastle's opener after Shola Ameobi beat him to a free-kick which fell to Marlon Harewood for the opener.

In the second-half, the Australian shot-stopper was let off the hook after an awful clearance ricocheted goalward towards the unguarded net off Harewood, only to go marginally wide.

Ameobi, though, got the second for the Magpies on 59 minutes to leave Boro with just one win in nine matches since Gareth Southgate's sacking.

In Germany's Bundesliga, Dario Vidosic and Matthew Spiranovic missed out yet again for FC Nurnberg as they slumped to a woeful 3-0 loss at FC Koln, which surely puts the pressure on boss Michael Oenning.

In Holland's Eredivisie, David Carney - now returning to Oz for surgery on his shoulder - and Nikita Rukavytsya didn't have to chance to have a run as FC Twente's clash with FC Utrecht was postponed.

In Greece's Super League, veteran keeper Zeljko Kalac was in goals as Kavala won 2-1 at Panionios. Neither of Rob Stambolziev or Apostolos Giannou were involved for Kavala.

Finally, in Greece's Beta Ethniki, Nathan Burns's AO Kerkyra claimed a 1-0 win over Doxa Dramas which keeps them top of the league, seven points clear of their nearest rivals.

Burns started the game on the left side of midfield for Kerkyra after a few weeks out with injury and the Aussie forced an early save but had to be replaced at the break in difficult conditions.
