THE Futsalroos have qualified for the quarter-finals of the AFC Futsal Championship with a game to spare following a 6-0 drubbing of Korea Republic at the Al Shabab Club Stadium on Saturday.
Both Australia and Iran have notched up two from two wins in Group C of the competition and are guaranteed of progressing to the next round whatever the result of their final match against each other.
Against the Koreans, Futsalroo hero Fernando De Moraes scored a brace while Peter Spathis, Gregory Giovenali, Toby Seeto and Daniel Fogarty added a goal apiece to the final score line.
Needing a win after going down 14-1 to the Iranians, the Koreans started the match aggressively but were undone by the Australians’ clinical counter attack starting with De Moraes’ opener in the 15th minute which he followed-up four minutes later.
“I was expecting the backlash of the Iran match from them,” Australia coach Steven Knight told the FFA website.
“At this amateur level players sometimes fall under the pressure so we had to be very cautious in the beginning, but with the progression of the match we got it right.
“Even we knew that they would rely on power play later so we also had sessions on that and successfully dealt with that.
“We will face Iran next and you have to respect the world’s elite so we will go into the match with our conservative mindset but our eyes are on the quarter finals, which would be a really big match for the whole of Australia.”
The top four finishers of the AFC Futsal Championship directly qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Cup to be held in Thailand later this year.
