Asian champions Gamba Osaka booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Emperor's Cup after coming from behind to beat Jubilo Iwata 3-1 at Yamaha Stadium.
Jubilo delighted the home crowd by taking the lead just a minute into the game as Masashi Nakayama headed the ball to Norihiro Nishi, who found the net with a fine volley.
However, Gamba battled back and levelled the score in the 16th minute when Hayato Sasaki dribbled up the left channel before firing home from 22 metres.
The winners of the Asian Champions League were missing injured midfielders Takahiro Futagawa and Yasuhito Endo but took the upper hand in the second half and went ahead 11 minutes after the break as Satoshi Yamaguchi headed home a Sasaki cross.
Jubilo went close to an equaliser in the 74th minute when former Japan striker Nakayama received a neat pass from Hiroshi Nanami and struck a shot from 12 metres that beat Gamba goalkeeper Yosuke Fujigaya but came back off the post.
Gamba sealed the win with a third goal a minute later as substitute Masato Yamazaki latched onto a long pass and chipped the ball over the head of the advancing Jubilo goalkeeper, Kenya Matsui.
Three of the quarter-finals are scheduled for December 20 with Yokohama F. Marinos playing J2 side Sagan Tosu, Shimizu S-Pulse taking on FC Tokyo and Kashiwa Reysol facing J2 champions Sanfrecce Hiroshima.
As Gamba are involved in the FIFA Club World Cup, they will not be meeting Nagoya Grampus until Christmas Day.
