Postecoglou threw his hands in the air when asked to summarise the qualifying campaign after Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Thailand, speaking emotionally before tempering himself and walking out of the press conference.

"It's been unbelievable and it's been magnificent," he said with a sense of sarcasm.

"I've been sitting here frustrated for the last two years, listening to some of the garbage being thrown around at these players.

"It's tough qualifying for a World Cup. It's even tougher when it's your first one for a lot of these guys.

"We've played 10 games and lost one. They've done everything I've asked of them.

“I'm the one putting them out there trying to win games of football.

"You know what…? Yeah that's all I've got to say."

Postecoglou’s snap came amid mounting pressure with Australia made to wait to find out their automatic World Cup qualification fate after the Thailand win.

Australia will miss out on automatic qualification for the World Cup for the first time since joining the Asian Football Confederation if Saudi Arabia defeats Japan from 3.30am AEST Wednesday.

Fox Sports commentator Mark Bosnich has led the criticism of Postecoglou since Australia’s 2-0 loss to Japan last week.

Bosnich backed up that criticism after the Thailand win on Fox Sports' post-game coverage.

“At the moment, he’s hanging by a thread in my opinion,” the former Australia goalkeeper said.

“If we go through the play-off route there should be serious consideration given to the fact we need a different voice because those players, regardless of what they’re saying publically, aren’t responding like they used to.”

Brisbane Roar coach John Aloisi leapt to Postecoglou’s defence on Fox Sports.

“I respect everyone’s opinion, but speaking as a coach, Ange is a strong person and you have to be when you’re a leader,” ex-Socceroos striker Aloisi said.

“You have to back and believe in what you do and he does that. The players follow him.

“If they didn’t believe in what he’s doing, they wouldn’t have played like they did tonight.”
