EXCLUSIVE: Former Sydney FC assistant coach Aytek Genc has revealed a thug culture among a small number of so-called Sydney Olympic fans was behind his resignation from the club.
Genc resigned last week from the NSW Premier League club after he was allegedly heavied into making certain team selections. It's believed around 10 so-called fans, connected to one particular player at the club, were allegedly involved.
"The board has done a fantastic job and are very progressive. They tried to convince me to stay," Genc told au.fourfourtwo.com.
"It's not about the board, it's about a small group of so-called fans who are connected to this one player. Fancy bringing down a group of thugs to try and heavy me into playing certain players?
"They abused my captain as well, these people who are sniping from the periphery, this bad element, this old element.
"I resigned because I didn't like the vibe and I consider myself a professional coach. It undermines my work, it's not an environment conducive to working professionally and I don't want to be compromised."
Genc, a former Socceroo under Terry Venables in the late 90s, took over the coaching reins at Belmore this season from another former Socceroo in Milan Blagojevic.
Genc previously coached at Blacktown Demons and was an A-League assistant under Branko Culina at the sky blues in 2007.
Olympic currently have six points from five games and are just three points off fourth placed Sutherland Sharks (with a game in hand after a washout last weekend).
The former NSL champion's new coach is a familiar face. It's ex Newcastle Jets and Wollongong Wolves supremo Nick Theodorakopoulos - himself a one-time player at the club.
As for Genc, one of the more promising coaches outside the A-League, he says he will continue his coaching education and look to the future.
"I'd like to go to South America and Europe and maybe Asia to learn more about coaching," he said. "And I'm coaching at Knox Grammar too so ideally I'd like to stay in Australia but we will see.
"I'm still very much committed to coaching."
Sydney Olympic did not return au.fourfourtwo.com's phone calls today.
