Defending champions Germany issued a stark warning to those looking to wrest the World Cup from them as they romped to a stunning 11-0 defeat of Argentina in the opening game of the Women's World Cup.
Germany dominated throughout and had deservedly built a 5-0 lead by half-time before adding a further six goals after the break in front of an impressive and vociferous crowd at the Hongkou stadium in Shanghai.
Argentina goalkeeper Vanina Correa gifted Germany the lead in the 12th minute when she diverted a Melanie Behringer corner into her own net and just five minutes later Kerstin Garefrekes made it 2-0 with a fine volley.
In the 24th minute the tricky Behringer gave Argentina a mountain to climb when she skipped the challenge of a defender in the box before firing beyond Correa.
Birgit Prinz made it 4-0 just before the half-hour mark and just as the South American side were praying for the relief of the half-time whistle Prinz added a fifth.
Germany did not loosen their grip on the game after the break as they made it 6-0 in the 51st minute when Renate Lingor struck from outside the box.
Six minutes later Sandra Smisek got in on the scoring for Germany as she followed up a free-kick that had rebounded off the post.
Prinz secured her hat-trick when she nodded home Behringer's cross before Smisek notched again to make it 9-0 in the 70th minute.
Frankfurt striker Smisek grabbed her third goal of the game nine minutes later before another error from Argentina goalkeeper Correa saw her complete a brace of own goals in the dying seconds.
