The Stuttgart striker struck twice in the space of six minutes as Joachim Low's men gave the European Championship co-hosts a lesson in cool finishing.

Miroslav Klose had given the visitors the lead in the 23rd minute before Bayern Munich club-mate Lukas Podolski rounded off the rout in the dying minutes.

Germany gave notice of their intentions early on when Bastian Schweinsteiger drove wide from just outside the area and Michael Ballack had a shot from similar range charged down by Philippe Senderos.

The lively Schweinsteiger went close again when he blazed narrowly over from Thomas Hitzlsperger's free-kick.

And the former Aston Villa man called Switzerland stopper Diego Benaglio into action soon after with a trademark left-foot piledriver.

A Germany goal looked on the cards and it duly arrived midway through the half, Klose slotting home from close range after Benaglio failed to cut out Gomez's low cross.

Alexander Frei headed Senderos' cross straight into the arms of Germany keeper Jens Lehmann at the other end, while the Arsenal stopper also had to be alert to keep out Eren Derdiyok's snapshot.

But those were rare moments of promise for Kobi Kuhn's side and Chelsea star Ballack could have doubled Germany's lead before half-time.

His shot from the edge of the area after a swift counter-attack was saved by the legs of Benaglio.

Low's men continued to dominate after the break as the players looked to make the most of their final chance to impress the coach before he names his squad for this summer's tournament.

Podolski's drilled effort was fumbled out for a corner by the overworked Benaglio, but he was helpless to prevent the in-form Gomez from extending Germany's lead after 61 minutes.

Clemens Fritz dispossessed Tranquillo Barnetta in midfield and passed for Gomez to send a finish into the bottom corner from inside the area.

And the Stuttgart man struck again in the 67th minute, giving the horribly exposed Benaglio no chance after Podolski's throughball had sent him clear one-on-one with the keeper.

And Podolski, Germany's top scorer in qualifying for Euro 2008, took the glory for himself in the 89th minute to further rub salt into Swiss wounds.

The attacker put a disappointing domestic season behind him by running on to Kevin Kuranyi's pass and taking the ball round Benaglio before sliding home the fourth.
