GERMANY have been hit with another injury blow with defender Heiko Westermann becoming the fifth player to be ruled out from one of Australia’s World Cup group opponents.
The Germans had a solid 3-0 win over Hungary in Budapest on the weekend, but after the game it was discovered Westermann has fractured his foot, disappointing coach Joachim Low.
"He would have been important for us because of his versatility," Low told Sky Sports. "He was in excellent physical shape in training.
"Heiko would have played an important role at the World Cup."
The 27-year-old has been capped 19 times for Germany and is capable of playing in the centre of defence or on the flanks.
The Schalke defender said he was "totally disappointed".
"That was huge for me to be at the World Cup," he said. "I felt really well in training. Now, the only thing I can do is wish the team all the best."
Westermann is the fifth player Low has lost due to injury.
Chelsea's Michael Ballack was ruled out with an ankle injury before they lost fellow midfielders Simon Rolfes and Christian Traesch and goalkeeper Rene Adler.
With Tuesday's squad cut deadline approaching, Low must now cut one more player to make it 23.
Midfielder Sami Khedira, who limped off in Budapest, will be fit for South Africa while Marcell Jansen is confident he will make the squad after playing for the first time in almost two months.
