JENS LEHMANN (Arsenal, 10/11/69)

The veteran goalkeeper has scarcely featured at all for Arsenal this season after losing his place to Manuel Almunia, but looks set to remain first choice in the national team after keeping a clean sheet in their last two friendlies against Euro 2008 co-hosts Austria and Switzerland.

TIMO HILDEBRAND (Valencia, 05/04/79)

The former Stuttgart stopper is competing with Lehmann for the number one spot after long being third choice behind the Arsenal man and Oliver Kahn. But he has endured a difficult first season in La Liga as Valencia have struggled.

ROBERT ENKE (Hannover, 24/08/77)

The much-travelled Enke has finally found his feet at Hannover after stints in Portugal with Benfica, Spain with Barcelona and Turkey with Fenerbahce. His only appearance for Germany came in their friendly defeat to Denmark in March last year.

DEFENDERS

PHILIPP LAHM (Bayern Munich, 11/11/83)

Lahm scored the opening goal of the 2006 World Cup against Costa Rica and went on to prove himself as one of the most promising full-backs in European football at the tournament. He has come in for criticism from Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer though for his performances since then.

PER MERTESACKER (Werder Bremen, 29/09/84)

The centre-back came of age at the 2006 World Cup with a series of calm displays. He always seems collected under pressure and also boasts an exemplary disciplinary record.

ARNE FRIEDRICH (Hertha Berlin, 29/05/79)

An experienced defender who has racked up over 50 caps for the national team, Friedrich's blistering pace allows him to get forward well from his usual right-back position. He is a versatile player who can play anywhere along the back line or as a holding midfielder.

CLEMENS FRITZ (Werder Bremen, 07/12/80)

An attack-minded full-back, Fritz will look to overlap down the right-hand side at every opportunity this summer. His work rate and crossing ability make him as much of an asset going forward as in defence.

MARCELL JANSEN (Bayern Munich, 04/11/85)

Jansen is likely to be competing with club-mate Lahm for the left-back spot in Austria and Switzerland. One of a number of up-and-coming German defenders, the 22-year-old was a member of the 2006 World Cup squad, but made only one appearance - in the third-place play-off against Portugal.

HEIKO WESTERMANN (Schalke, 14/08/83)

The Schalke defender only made his Germany debut in February, but has already been singled out for praise by coach Joachim Low. He has looked so assured in Schalke's Champions League run this season that he is likely to be on the plane despite never having played a competitive international.

CHRISTOPH METZELDER (Real Madrid, 05/11/80)

The former Borussia Dortmund centre-back will partner Mertesacker at the back if he can prove his fitness in time. He has missed much of the season for Real after undergoing surgery on a foot injury, but his fine reading of the game make him an automatic first choice if fully fit.

MIDFIELDERS

BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER (Bayern Munich, 01/08/84)

The tricky winger was one Germany's most impressive performers at the 2006 World Cup, scoring twice in the third-place play-off win over Portugal. But he has endured a disappointing season for Bayern, with Frenchman Franck Ribery Ottmar Hitzfeld's first choice on the left side of midfield.

MICHAEL BALLACK (Chelsea, 26/09/76)

The Germany captain has found it hard to find his feet in the Premier League since moving to England from Bayern Munich after the World Cup. He missed much of the early part of the season through injury, but looks to have returned to form and fitness right on time.

THOMAS HITZLSPERGER (Stuttgart, 05/04/82)

The former Aston Villa midfielder is renowned for his explosive left foot which has earned him the nickname 'Der Hammer'. He scored the equaliser against Energie Cottbus on the final day of last season in a 2-1 win which secured Stuttgart the Bundesliga title.

BERND SCHNEIDER (Bayer Leverkusen, 17/11/73)

The veteran right-sided player is a major doubt for the finals after undergoing spinal surgery at the end of April, but if fit he is a key part of Low's starting line-up. A member of the 2002 and 2006 World Cup squads, Schneider has racked up over 80 caps for his country.

TORSTEN FRINGS (Werder Bremen, 22/11/76)

A fine foil for the attack-minded Ballack, the midfield enforcer has missed a huge chunk of the season with a recurring knee problem and faces a race to prove his fitness to Low.

SIMON ROLFES (Bayer Leverkusen, 21/01/82)

Voted the best defensive midfielder in the Bundesliga in a recent poll by Kicker magazine, Rolfes has become the lynchpin of the Leverkusen midfield. Despite only making his Bundesliga debut three years ago and international debut last year, he could be one of the surprise packages this summer.

SEBASTIAN KEHL (Borussia Dortmund, 13/02/80)

Once hailed as the saviour of German football - along with another Sebastian, Deisler, who has now retired through injury - it has not quite worked out that way. Kehl though is still an accomplished holding player, who can also play at the back.

PIOTR TROCHOWSKI (Hamburg, 22/03.1984)

Poland-born Trochowski failed to cut it as a youngster with Bayern Munich, but has grown into one of Hamburg's most influential players. He is likely to be used as a back-up this summer.

FORWARDS

MIROSLAV KLOSE (Bayern Munich, 09/06/78)

Klose struck five goals at the 2006 World Cup in Germany to claim the Golden Boot and has been a regular scorer in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich this season. He more than anyone will bear the goalscoring burden this summer.

LUKAS PODOLSKI (Bayern Munich, 04/06/85)

The former Cologne striker has endured a barren two seasons since joining Bayern Munich, but his goalscoring record at international level is impressive and he was Group D's top scorer in qualifying.

KEVIN KURANYI (Schalke, 02/03/82)

The Brazil-born forward is likely to be restricted to substitute appearances in Austria and Switzerland, but is an experienced international with almost 50 caps to his name. He is a member of the Schalke side which reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in their history this season.

OLIVER NEUVILLE (Borussia Monchengladbach, 01/05/73)

The veteran forward is now plying his trade in the German second division, but can still be relied on to bag a goal coming off the bench - as he did against Poland in stoppage time at the last World Cup.

MARIO GOMEZ (Stuttgart, 10/07/1985)

The Stuttgart striker could be given the nod ahead of Podolski to start up front alongside Klose. He has been in prolific form this term and bagged a brace in the recent 4-0 friendly win over Switzerland.
