Die Mannschaft huffed and puffed but only came away with their first win of the 2018 World Cup Finals after Marco Reus' second half strike cancelled out Ola Toivonen's opener, before Kroos saved Germany at the death.

Germany now need to beat South Korea and hope Sweden don't beat already-qualified Mexico if they are to avoid an upset and exit the 2018 world cup.

GERMANY

Manuel Neuer - 7

First save of the night was greatly helped by Jerome Boateng's pressure as he quashed Marcus Berg's one-on-one chance. Saved a header from Berg on the stroke of half-time and another after Boateng was sent off to keep Germany in it.

Jonas Hector - 6

Hector had a chance in the first few minutes that fell his way but his shot was blocked inside the box. With Muller drifting left Hector tended to drift inside but Sweden's counter press seemed to exploit space in behind him.

Antonio Rudiger - 5

After Kroos lost the ball Rudiger's partner Boateng went to close him down. Kroos filled the space but couldn't put the necessary pressure on as Toivonen ran between the two central defenders.

Jerome Boateng - 3

Totally against the run of play, Marcus Berg was through one-on-one but his pressure put the striker off as Neuer came out to save. Arguably should have conceded a penalty for bringing down Marcus Berg in the first half but the referee waved it away without the VAR help. Received a second yellow card and was sent off on the 82nd minute.

Joshua Kimmich - 7

A great start to the game with two whipping crosses almost leading to goals for Germany in the first five minutes. Germany's favoured route in attack put him under a lot of pressure but he carved out opportunities a plenty for Germany.

Julian Draxler - 4

First clear-cut chance fell to him as he volleyed goalwards inside the box but Sebastian Larsson got in the way. Besides that early chance Draxler didn't offer much else and was subbed off at half-time.

Toni Kroos - 6.5

Kroos was influential winning loose balls and second balls in midfield and keeping pressure on Sweden inside their own defensive third. Kroos of all people gave away possession in Germany's half as Marcus Berg pounced and played in Claesson who set up Toivonen for the opener.

Redeeemd himself with the winner in the 94th minute from the free-kick and saved Germany's blushes.

Thomas Muller - 5.5

Some great early passing, probing the Swedish defence and making them nervous as German attackers swept in behind with mazy runs. Threatened more in the second half once Timo Werner moved out to the left.

Sebastian Rudy - N/A

Playing in central midfield, the midfielder provided cover for Kimmich when he surged forward at right-back. Was substituted after a knock to the head that saw him bleed from the nose.

TImo Werner - 6.5

Involved in the build up to Germany's first chance, heading in a cross for Draxler to shoot. A low drive into the box ricocheted off Gomez but found Reus who finished into the bottom corner for the equaliser.

Marco Reus - 7

Made splitting runs and got into deadly positions at the beginning of the match, Reus was unlucky not to have been involved in the opening goal of the match. The giant woke up with the equaliser one minute after the restart getting on the end of Werner's low cross.

Substitutes

Ilkay Gundogan - 5

Brought on after half an hour for the injured Rudy. After the sub Germany's sting was taken out of them but Gundogan helped get it back in the second half as Germany equalised.

Mario Gomez - 5

Brought on at half-time for Julian Draxler to add an apex to Germany's attack, forcing Timo Werner out to the left. It payed dividends with a goal three minutes into the second half.

Julian Brandt - N/A

SWEDEN

Robin Olsen - 7

In the wars early, punching clear and marshalling Sweden's defence. Germany had three blocked shots and numerous crosses into the penalty area in the opening 20 minutes. Saved the deflected shot from Gundogan and again saved Muller's follow up attempt.

Mikael Lustig - 6.5

Germany started on top and absolutely peppered the left and right flanks with Draxler his main opponent. Set up a chance for Berg in the box on 18 minutes, catching a flighted ball with a first-time cross.

Victor Lindelof - 7

Came back into the side for Pontus Jansson after missing out on the last match. The Manchester United defender used his strength and aerial ability to cope with Germany's aerial bombardment of the box.

Andreas Granqvist - 7

Nerves were jangling in the opening minutes as Germany cemented their position on top of the match and they just about survived the early onslaught of chances. Immense in defence as Germany pounded their back line in search of a winner.

Ludwig Augustinsson - 6.5

Didn't exactly pass the early test defending Kimmich on his left flank as two half chances came about from balls in behind and crosses from his flank. Got better as the match progressed offering great cover for Lindelof.

Sebastian Larsson - 7.5

First involvement was a blocked shot from 8 yards out from Julian Draxler after three minutes as Germany started on top. A wicked ball in the first half set up Berg with a header that was stopped by the great reflexes of Neuer.

Albin Ekdal - 7.5

Immense for Sweden in blocking the route to goal through the middle, forcing Germany out wide while also initiating a palpitating the counter-press that threatened each time Germany lost the ball.

Emil Forsberg - 6.5

First great run for Sweden as they broke on the counter-attack, side-stepping Boateng but was pulled back by Muller after he was surging one-on-one.

Viktor Claesson - 7

A sensational ball on the run to find Toivonen in between the centre-backs to open the scoring against the run of play, against the world champions.

Marcus Berg - 7

Another one-on-one chance spurned, as Berg nearly opened the scoring when he thought he deserved a penalty for Boateng's push. Intercepted Kroos' pass to initiate Claesson who crossed for Toivonen for the opener.

Ola Toivonen - 8

Toivonen opened the scoring with a brilliant chest down from Claesson's cross and a chipped the ball over Neuer.

Substitutes

Jimmy Durmaz - 5

Brought on for Viktor Claesson in 74 minutes to sneak a goal.

John Guidetti - N/A

Brought on for the goalscorer Toivonen

Isaac Kiese Thelin - N/A
