The Three Lions won 1-0 with a goal from Manchester United striker Danny Wellbeck, but lost defender Gary Cahill for this year's tournament after he suffered a double fracture of his jaw.

England faced a tough examination against a Belgian side which featured the likes of prospective Chelsea signing Eden Hazard, Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini and Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen.

And Gerrard insists that the narrow win will hold them in good stead before their opening group game with France on June 11.

"It's good - it's the test we needed," the Liverpool and England captain said.

"We've got over a week now to dust ourselves down and recover and get ourselves ready for France.

"We're going to have to be very disciplined and workmanlike without the ball. I thought we were solid. We restricted them to very few efforts on goal."

Gerrard also said that his fitness is not an issue, despite the fact he appeared fatigued at the end of the game.

Manager Roy Hodgson has already lost midfielders Gareth Barry and Frank Lampard from his initial 23-man squad, but Gerrard insists he will be fit for next week's game with France.

"I tired towards the end of the game but it's the first time I've played that amount of football since the FA Cup final, so I'll benefit from those minutes," the 32-year-old said.

"I'll be fine for the France game."
