Returning home on Sunday night following a victorious three game tour of Asian Cup host country Malaysia, Glory has been hit by injuries to the extent that they've cancelled their next two practise matches ahead of their pre-season cup first match in Port Macquarie on July 14.

Perth Glory coach Ron Smith could call on just 12 players for the club’s friendly against Perth SC on Tuesday night, which his side lost.

“We came back from Malaysia with a few injury concerns and I need to ensure we have enough players available for our first pre-season cup game in just nine days.

“Unfortunately at this stage we’re badly down on numbers,” said Smith of a squad feeling the effects of an punishing pre-season that has seen them play four matches in seven days

Like the Socceroos, the Glory players were losing between 2-4kgs per session in Asia. “If I could pack my bag again, I'd have taken a whole lot of protein shakes. In terms of carbs it was fine but just getting hold of a good steak was hard work,” Glory's Socceroo defender David Tarka told au.fourfourtwo.com today.

“I've lost about a 1.5kg from that trip which is good for my skinfold tests. The tour was good for conditioning. However, some of the boys lost a bit of muscle because the diet we were on wasn't the best so some of the them have been in the gym to get that muscle back on again. You need the protein going back in once the fatty stores get depleted.

“It's a bit of a slap in the face coming from the cold here to the heat of Malaysia,” Tarka added.
