EXCLUSIVE: When your brother is West Coast’s star on-baller Daniel Kerr, it’s no surprise Perth Glory W-League striker Sam Kerr is an incredibly gifted athlete.
Kerr, who turned 16 in September, scored one of the goals of the season in the stultifying heat against Sydney FC last Saturday.
Picking up possession just inside the sky blues' half, the pint-sized playmaker wriggled clear of her markers and launched an audacious 35yd shot into the top corner to light up Leichhardt Oval.
It was a rare goal of confidence and quality. And Kerr had another crack from long-range a few minutes later as she continued to prove a handful for the Sydney FC defence.
The sky blue girls went on to win the hugely entertaining clash 5-2 but more than that, it was the sheer raw talent and natural ability Kerr displayed that caught the eye.
Matildas and Sydney FC star Heather Garriock identified Kerr as one to watch this season and she wasn't wrong. As an attacking playmaker, Kerr appears to have it all. She has an eye for goal, fantastic skill in tight areas and knows how to shield the ball and dribble.
As a 15-year-old, Kerr also made her full debut for the national team in February against Italy.
Linda O'Neill marked the Fremantle-born Kerr on Saturday and said it was one of her toughest days. "It was very difficult because she is so skilful and fast," she told au.fourfourtwo.com afterwards.
"You just have to stay low and watch her feet. But I guess because I train with her in the Young Matildas, I kinda knew how she plays. She's one of the best players in the league, even if she's also one of the youngest."
Kerr's duel with O'Neill, 17, was fascinating to watch unfold as the tenacious sky blue midfielder-turned-full-back slowly got on top of her opponent - no small feat given Kerr's prodigious natural talent.
Kerr was eventually subbed off late in the second half but she'd made a statement. Sydney coach Alen Stajcic has mentored the youngster in national age teams since she was 12 and is not surprised by what we're now all seeing with Kerr.
"Linda had a great game on her but Sam is fantastic," said Stajcic. "I've watched her develop as a player since she was 12.
"I think Glory have three or four of the best attacking talent in the country in Sam, Lisa De Vanna, Kate Gill and Collette McCallum."
Perth conclude their W-League season with two home games starting this weekend against faltering champs Brisbane Roar at Clipsal Stadium, Inglewood.
The purple shirts must win both of their last two games if they are any chance of finishing fourth and sneaking into the finals - and give fans another chance to see this explosive talent. Remember that name...Sam Kerr.
