Australia coach Ange Postecoglou is undecided on whether Mat Ryan or Mitchell Langerak will be his first choice goalkeeper for next month’s opening final round 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
The Socceroos are due to take on Iraq in Perth before meeting UAE in Abu Dhabi five days later, with Postecoglou naming his 23-man squad on Wednesday.
Ryan, Langerak and Bournemouth shot-stopper Adam Federici were named as Postecoglou’s three keepers in the squad.
Valencia custodian Ryan has been Postecoglou’s preferred choice throughout his tenure, but Langerak is building a case to usurp him.
The ex-Melbourne Victory stopper is now number one at German club Stuttgart, while Ryan only managed eight La Liga starts at Valencia last term, battling with Diego Alves and Jaume Domenech to be first choice.
“He’s started every pre-season game even with Alves there, last year that wasn’t the case,” Postecoglou said of Ryan.
“Indications are that (he’ll play), we’ll see when the season starts. We’ll see if he gets the opportunity.”
Spain’s La Liga commences this weekend, with Ryan’s Valencia at home to Las Palmas on Tuesday morning (AEST).
“It’s not only about being number one,” Postecoglou added.
“If he does start, he’s at a big club with big expectations and he’s got to play well, which is great.
“It’s exactly what he needs, he’ll need to battle for that.”
Langerak played Stuttgart’s final two Bundesliga matches last term upon relegation after an injury-cursed season and has impressed in the first two rounds of the 2016-17 2.Bundesliga campaign.
The 27-year-old appears finally set for an extended run as first-choice goalkeeper after years as Roman Weidenfeller’s deputy at Borussia Dortmund and last term’s injury and selection frustrations after moving to Stuttgart.
“It’s also pleasing to see Mitch Langerak playing, he’s been fantastic in the first two weeks of the 2.Bundesliga,” Postecoglou said.
“He’s been outstanding in goal. It’s good to have him back in the squad as well and playing regularly, because he’s had some issues over the last few years as well.”
