ROBBIE Fowler’s first A-League game against Sydney FC in the harbour city has been given added spice after the FFA announced the SCG as the venue for Fury’s clash with the sky blues.
Saturday September 12 is the date with new A-League boss Archie Fraser describing the game as one of the biggest draw cards of the season.
"It's Robbie Fowler's first game in Sydney. And we really felt there was an opportunity to move the game somewhere.
"The easy option would've been to move it to Parramatta stadium but I just think it's a wonderful opportunity for the fans to be able to come and watch Robbie Fowler," he told au.fourfourtwo.com.
The timing in terms of ground use works well for a good surface to host Fury. The SCG is used by the Sydney Swans for the regular winter season but the club utilizes ANZ stadium for their finals games in September. And it's too early in the season for the cricket pitch to be laid meaning the Sydney FC game will have a full two weeks of pitch preparation time.
"Who would've thought Robbie Fowler would've been playing football on the SCG with all the greats that have gone before him," added Fraser.
"So I think it'll be quite an emotional game, even for Robbie himself who looks back at the great English cricketers who've played there.
"And with the new stand at the SCG the ground will be perfect to host such a game."
England played Australia in a friendly match on the same ground in the 1980s but the iconic venue has rarely if ever been utilised for football since then.
The new A-League season kicks off on Thursday August 7 when the Premiers Melbourne Victory host Central Coast at Etihad stadium.
And the FFA said they were untroubled by using Suncorp Stadium for the opening round fixture between Roar and Gold Coast despite an NRL game being played on the surface 24 hours earlier. FFA CEO Ben Buckley tipped a crowd of 50,000 for the derby day clash.
Other news out of today's launch of the A-League season five draw were:
*More midweek games during the holiday season
*Subiaco Oval in Perth will be used for some games
*A six-team final series
With ten clubs now competing, the FFA has published the draw in a pdf booklet form - which you can download here.
