EXCLUSIVE: Ben Buckley has dropped a heavy hint that the Gold Coast's battle for A-League admittance is tantalisingly close to success.
Billionaire businessman Clive Palmer has a strong vision for a Gold Coast A-League team and FFA officials are clearly impressed.
No decision has yet been reached on which club (or clubs) will be formally admitted to the A-League for season five but Palmer's group was given further encouragement today.
Football Federation Australia CEO Buckley is delighted with the level of interest from different groups to join the A-League and he says that numerous parties fighting for limited spots is good news for the process.
He told au.fourfourtwo.com: "It's competitive for admission (to the A-League). That's good, that's healthy.
"We've got consortium groups from all over the country who want those four licences.
"The Gold Coast looks extremely likely. They have put a great effort into their bid.
"We are delighted to have someone like Clive Palmer who knows the Gold Coast, grew up on the Gold Coast and who wants it to become part of the community landscape. So that's a great opportunity.
"We've got very, very good quality proposals from Melbourne, we've got strong interest from the west of Sydney.
"We want to have and expect to have a minimum of two additional teams in season five and two additional teams in season six. We're on track."
Buckley was not to be drawn on just how many different bids were being examined at this point but, with a grin, he told au.fourfourtwo.com: "My desk is extremely cluttered.
