Today’s news that FFA has stripped Gold Coast owner Clive Palmer of his licence due to breaches of the CPA has alarm bells ringing over those few players with contracts for next season.

For the remainder of this season, FFA will encourage GCU players to enter into arrangements with FFA for the final four games of the season with an offer to pay the players.

Exactly how much the players will be offered has yet to be revealed, and many with contracts expiring at the end of April will want to be paid until then before agreeing to play out the season.

A-League General Manager Lyall Gorman is already on the Gold Coast to talk with players and make arrangements for the season's remaining games, starting with the gamne against Wellington Phoenix this weekend.

“The players are just one of the many innocent victims in all this and FFA will do its best to enable them to see out their playing season on the pitch," said Gorman.

But for next season, Gold Coast United’s players with contracts through to the end of next season are believed to include Ben Halloran, Gol-Gol Mehbrahtu, Jake Barker-Daish and Chris Harold.

Their dreams are now on hold while they wait to see if they will be paid or fall through the legal cracks of an ugly stoush in the courts over what could be a number of years.

Agents of Gold Coast players today revealed their fears to au.fourfourtwo.com about finding new homes for various players.

Many A-League clubs have limited numbers of available spots on their rosters due to existing contracts already in place for next season.

With the likelihood of one less team in the A-League to accomodate them and many teams already well into recruitment mode by this stage of the season, it will be much harder for the likes of Michael Thwaite, Joel Porter, Dylan Macallister or Kristian Rees to find a new club.

Professional Footballers Australia were today looking for answers in the wake of the club's imminent axeing.

“The PFA Executive and A-League Club Delegates Committee will hold an urgent meeting tonight to consider FFA’s decision and its impact on the players and the A-League competition," said the PFA's Brendan Schwab.

“At a minimum, the PFA will seek urgent discussions with FFA to reach agreement on five matters of concern," said a statement on the PFA website.

"1. The honouring of all current player contracts, which expire on 30 April 2012, with four players contracted until 30 April 2013;

"2. The treatment and rehabilitation of injured players (to ensure that the insurance coverage is in place and that players have access to necessary facilities).  Gold Coast United presently has the worst injury record in the competition, with 16 players having missed matches by reason of injury this season.  7 are presently recovering from long-term injuries;

"3. The status of the work visas of foreign players;

"4. The payment of entitlements for players whose contracts have been terminated without cause (Peter Perchtold and Robson); and

"5. Of course, the integrity of the A-League competition.  The last four Gold Coast United matches are against clubs in the top six: Wellington Phoenix, Brisbane Roar, Newcastle Jets and Perth Glory.  Given how well Gold Coast United is playing, these could have a major effect on the table and would throw the competition into disarray if not played.

“The PFA is disappointed it was not advised of FFA’s decision until immediately prior to FFA’s media announcement, which we regard as a breach of FFA’s consultative obligations under the A-League Collective Bargaining Agreement.

“We would have liked to have been in a position to have reached agreement with FFA and the club on all 5 matters before a decision was made by FFA.  I will hold discussions with FFA to find out why such a major decision like this was made in this manner.

“The PFA’s concerns over the security of A-League player contracts are again highlighted by today’s announcement.

“The PFA expects Gold Coast United owner Clive Palmer to take legal action and to seek an injunction to restrain FFA from implementing its decision.

“The PFA will be meeting with all Gold Coast United players tomorrow.”
