Six weeks after Tony Popovic departed his coaching position on the eve of the A-League season, Western Sydney finally have a full-time head coach in former Adelaide United boss Josep Gombau. 

Gombau, a former Barcelona youth coach brought an attacking style of play to the A-League and was also known for his passionate displays on the side lines during his two seasons with the Reds.

On his first official day as Wanderers coach the 41-year-old said keeping a lid on his emotions could be a challenge.

“Look it’s something that just comes,” he said.

“It’s not something that I prepare or something that I am thinking about doing if we score.

“When I am in the game I am a passionate man, and this just comes to me.

"I will try and control myself. In the end the normal situation is to be in control, but we will see what happens.”

Gombau left his position as coach of the Olyroos to take up the vacant Wanderers job and said the chance to be involved in Australian club football again was too good to refuse.

“It’s a good opportunity for me to be at one of the biggest clubs in the A-League and it’s a good challenge," he said.

“It’s something that I like to do. It’s a change from the national team set up where you are on the field every two or three months compared to being on the field every day.

“This opportunity came at this moment. I was working hard to have the team (Olyroos) as prepared as possible to go to China (and play in the Asian Cup) next year but then this opportunity came, and I took it.”

Western Sydney are currently undefeated but have only recorded one win with the other four games ending in draws, and Gombau said he will be making tactical changes to remedy that.

“We are doing well,” he said. “Sometimes in a game the small details can change (the result) and we will try and improve on these small details from now.

“From the beginning what we will do is put a new system and also change a little bit the way that we want to play.

"This will take time to adapt but we will work hard to do this and make the adaption quickly.

“The message to the players is that we start a new challenge together.

"We need to work hard because tactically we want to implement a lot of new things and we start from today and in the future, we will be very good.”
