EXCLUSIVE: Former Socceroo Gerry Gomez says his link with Barcelona’s youth academy will bring the Catalan giants’ senior side to Australia in the next two years.
Gomez, 49, currently runs a Barcelona backed training academy in NSW called Sydney Soccer Football Academy.
The academy endorses and uses Barcelona's youth training program called Plan Marcet and is a football talent recruitment program for the reigning European champions.
The Costa Rican-born former NSL stalwart with Sydney City and Marconi has visited Barcelona three times this year accompanying various players from his programs in Australia.
There Gomez had his own players train at Barca's "Scuola" program based at the Nou Camp - an open program for kids from around the world that includes study and training. It operates as a breeding ground for the cream of the crop to potentially move into the club's academy.
Gomez says he's made good connections with the club's hierarchy and it's this link he believes can be the catalyst for what could be the biggest Australian club tour in living memory.
The process starts this January with Gomez set to sign off on bringing Ruben Della to Australia for coaching clinics in Lismore. Della is the technical director of Barcelona's academies across the Middle East. He hopes to also arrange sessions for Della with local coaches during a 10-day visit.
Gomez, who also works for Sydney FC in a support role, says every time he visits Barcelona it's an eye-opening experience.
"Barcelona is a very serious club," he said. "They spend so much time developing these kids. The training sessions are very organised. The clearly have a program, a pathway.
"There's a structure with the aim that you become a first team player for Barcelona. I saw their academy team play, and honestly, it's different football. It's almost too good to be true."
As an example, this season Valdés, Piqué, Puyol, Xavi, Busquets, Pedro, Iniesta, Messi, Bojan, Jeffren and Fontàs have all been part of coach and former player Pep Guardiola's team this season.
In fact, in Spain, the Barcelona versus Real Madrid Classico is frequently referred as "La Cantera versus La Cartera". Translated, it means a team of homegrown stars versus a team of big money stars bought in.
Gomez added: "Our aim is to have a full-time Barcelona academy in Australia.
"But in the meantime we are looking to bring Barcelona to Australia. We're looking at a two-year plan for 2010 or 2011 and it would be a tour of Asia or Australia.
"We would like to educate some of the local coaches the way they educate them in Spain through the Barcelona philosophy.
"They really want to come to Australia to spread their football culture and show us not just that they won the UEFA Champions League, but how they won it.
"The amount of work they did to win that game against Manchester United ... it wasn't a one-off."
