MELBOURNE Heart prodigy Curtis Good has completed the final hurdle of his move to English Premier League side Newcastle United after having his work permit approved.
Sportal understands the 19-year-old will fly to England in the coming days to officially sign his contract and link up with Newcastle's first-team squad.
The defender trialed with the club for over a week in June and impressed manager Alan Pardew enough to win a permanent deal, subject to a transfer fee being agreed between the two clubs.
"Newcastle formally wrote to us and they were extremely positive about Curtis' time there and him as a person and that reflects well on the club and the A-League," said Melbourne Heart's football operations manager John Didulica after his trial concluded.
Good – who is left-footed and comfortable on the ball - only signed a professional deal with Heart in February 2011 but stood out in his 24 A-League appearances this season, showing composure and maturity beyond his years at the back.
Good's move will earn Heart a reported $600,000.
Coach John Aloisi said Good’s move was evidence of the strength of the development pathway at Heart.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for Curtis," said Aloisi. "Newcastle United is one of the biggest clubs in the United Kingdom, and we are absolutely delighted he has the opportunity to test his wares on such a stage.
“While Curtis will certainly be missed, his proposed transfer is a great affirmation of our youth policy, and a demonstration of the club’s ability to assist in developing players to such an extent that they’re able to move to one of Europe’s leading competitions.
“We wish Curtis well and hope he will one day return to don the red and white stripes of our club.”
Chief Executive Officer Scott Munn said Good’s sale was part of the club's founding policy to give emerging talent a chance to earn a transfer to Europe,
“When we formed this club, it was always our goal to nurture a young talent and take him to one of the biggest clubs, in one of the biggest leagues in the world,” Munn said.
“To be on the verge of having achieved this ambition within two years is a substantial achievement and one which we hope to be replicated many times again in the future.”
