The goalkeeper has been unable to reclaim his place in the Sunderland side following his return from an ankle injury and has played just one senior game since November.

Scotland boss George Burley refused to be drawn on whether Gordon is still his first-choice keeper as he named his squad for the World Cup qualifying double-header against Holland and Iceland at Hampden today.

Gordon said: "It's a big call but that's what he gets paid for. He's the manager and I'm hopeful that he'll look at it favourably.

"From my point of view, I've got the most international experience but it's certainly going to be a tough call for him."

He told BBC Scotland: "There's absolutely no question over my fitness; I'm ready to go.

"The one first-team game that I played was against Blackburn in the FA Cup.

"I played very well that night and I've shown that I can come back from a long spell out and play, and play to a very high standard.

"I've played for Scotland on 30-odd occasions now so I know what it takes and what it means to play for my country and hopefully I can get that chance to do it again."

He added on Sky Sports News: "Obviously, I'd like a Premier League game before I go and join up with Scotland.

"But if that doesn't happen then I'm still ready to play."

Gordon's chief rival for a place in the side is Rangers' Allan McGregor.

"You know that Allan's a quality goalkeeper, everybody does," Gordon said. "I've trained with him long enough now.

"We've both come through the ranks of Edinburgh schools together, so I've known Allan a long time and I know there's competition there.

"But, at the same time, you have to be selfish about it and look after yourself and I'm the one that wants to play in the next game."

Burley has led Scotland to second place in qualifying Group 9 ahead of the March 28 trip to Amsterdam and the April 1 clash with Iceland at Hampden.

Gordon said: "I think my performances in the group so far for Scotland have been of a high standard and we're looking to push on and get some points from this double-header that can establish ourselves as second place in the group."

The keeper would love to test himself against Holland.

"Of course it's a big test and they're the games that you want to play in," he said.

"There's not a better team on their day than Holland; they play some great stuff and it will be a great test for everyone and I'm hopeful that I get the opportunity to test myself against some of the best players in Europe."
