Matildas midfielder Katrina ‘Mini’ Gorry believes the 2019 World Cup will come at a great time for Australia.
Australia are coming off a big year in women’s football, claiming the 2017 Tournament of Nations, came fourth in the Algarve Cup and enjoyed friendly wins over Brazil in Sydney and Newcastle.
The Matildas are currently ranked sixth in the world and also have next year’s Asian Cup in Jordan.
Brisbane Roar’s Gorry feels the depth by 2019 will be strong in the Matildas and has a real feeling they could make headlines in France.
“I think the average age of teams winning World Cups is 27ish and we’re at that age in two years’ time,” Gorry told FourFourTwo.
“The past few years through the World Cup and Olympics, we’ve had that belief where we can win it, but I think now our playing style has improved so much.
“We’re technically and tactically better, I think we’ve now shown we can compete with the best in the world and beat them as well.
“Beating America once (in the Tournament of Nations) isn’t going to improve anything but I think what will is consistency in the next few years.
“We’re playing more and more international games, we played a lot this year and we’re getting home games which means we’re getting more support from in Australia.”
It was heartbreak for the Matildas in Belo Horizonte in the Olympics last year when the game went to the dreaded shootout after a goalless draw.
Australia lost 7-6 on penalties as Gorry was one of the Aussies to have her spot kick saved.
“It’s always hard losing games, losing a quarter-final in the Olympics is really hard,” she said.
“The Olympics exit did bring everyone closer and we leant on each other through the tough times.
“We’ve had such a young group of girls for so long, so we were always going to mature at some stage. Now we’ve hit our peaks at 23, 24 and 25 and we’ve got the older players to balance it out.
“I think at the moment we have a really good culture in the team and to see how much we’ve developed in the last year is really exciting.”
Gorry has returned to her home club Brisbane for this season’s W-League, starting the season with a bang after scoring in the first minute, downing Sydney FC 3-1 at Allianz Stadium last week.
The 25-year-old has enjoyed time in the Japanese Nadeshiko League with Vegalta Sendai alongside fellow Aussie Caitlin Foord.

Now back at home living with her brother, she said returning to Japan is on her radar.
“It was awesome, we got to experience a lot of Japanese culture, got to venture out together every day so it definitely brought Caitlin and I’s friendship closer,” Gorry said.
“I think Japan has one of the best cultures in the world, they’re ridiculously respectful and it’s probably one of the only other places I’d live in the world, I love everything about it and I’d definitely go back next year.”
