EXCLUSIVE: If the marauding Central Coast win the right to host the 2011 A-League grand final, the season showpiece could still be played at the SFS rather than Bluetongue stadium in Gosford.
While a Suncorp Stadium Grand Final to be hosted by Premiers Brisbane Roar is the tipped venue, Central Coast’s form is such that they are genuine contenders to host the biggest day of the A-League season.
To do that, they’d need to triumph over Ange Postecoglou’s side in the two-legged major semi final kicking off the weekend of 18-20 February.
No doubt FFA – who run the A-League finals - will be hoping for a Suncorp final with the 52,000 seat capacity ground expected to be close to capacity.
Given over 40,000 turned up to the same venue in 1997 for the NSL grand final between Brisbane Strikers and Sydney United, there is every expectation of an equally bumper crowd.
However, FFA have the right to choose the grand final venue and if Central Coast win through the major semi final - and if the subsequent demand for tickets is greater than the capacity at Bluetongue stadium (around 18,000) - it could move from the Central Coast.
When contacted this morning by au.fourfourtwo.com, Central Coast deferred all questions on the grand final venue to the FFA.
It’s understood FFA have not yet decided on a venue should the Central Coast win through but they do have the option of moving the game to the SFS.
If so, it’s not the first time this would’ve happened. The Mariners won the right to host the 2008 showpiece game against the Jets .
But that game was shifted to the SFS due to Newcastle’s home ground EA Stadium’s capacity of around 24,000. At the SFS over 36,000 fans turned up to see Newcastle win 1-0.
The question now is: would demand for a Mariners home grand final exceed 18,000?
In other news, an FFA board meeting next Thursday is expected to decide on the A-League future of North Queensland Fury.
