Avram Grant believes his Chelsea players have an opportunity to make history as he prepares for his biggest game since taking over as manager.
The 52-year-old Israeli coach insists he does not worry about losing his job but there is little doubt Tuesday's Champions League clash with Fenerbahce may well go some way to deciding his fate at the end of the season.
Grant's bosses have always maintained his position is not under threat but if he fails to overturn a 2-1 quarter-final deficit at Stamford Bridge, the subject may yet find itself back on the agenda.
After a season littered with managerial upheaval, serious injuries to key players and the loss of four stars for a month during the African Nations Cup, Chelsea stand on the brink of what would be a sensational double.
The Blues are now just three points behind leaders Manchester United in the Barclays Premier League and are 90 minutes away from a place in the semi-final of Europe's top competition.
So, the chance to make history in the final weeks of the season is not lost on Grant, who replaced Jose Mourinho in September.
"It is a big opportunity to do it," he said. "We have spoken about this with the players. We want to use this opportunity. We know that it will not be easy.
"All this season has been very hard with many difficulties but having got to this stage, we want to do our best to use this opportunity."
Grant's preparations have been rocked by another injury to Czech Republic international goalkeeper Petr Cech.
Cech had only just recovered from an ankle injury and Grant was hoping to recall him for the game against the Turks.
But Cech required facial surgery after a training-ground collision with a team-mate and is out for a further two weeks.
Grant confirmed: "I don't feel so good about it. But any player who is injured does not make me happy.
"He has been a little bit unlucky this year. He was great in training and felt very good. He got injured in training and will be out for two weeks or something like that.
"It was a tackle between two players. It does not matter who the other player was, what matters is that he is injured. This year has not been a good year for him, it is his third injury."
Captain John Terry revealed Grant and his staff had lost their tempers with the players during the half-time break against Manchester City on Saturday.
Grant, Henk ten Cate and Steve Clarke were at pains to point out that, even though their side was leading 1-0, they had to keep their focus and concentration in order to finish off the opposition.
"I spoke with the players," said Grant. "My assistants also said something from the heart like we always do.
"It was not something unusual. We spoke about what we needed to do better in the second half against Manchester City.
"I spoke first and then they said what they had to say. They spoke from the heart and I like that.
"We have a normal procedure. I speak about the tactical side and then my assistants speak. We are a team."
Grant knows he cannot afford to lose tomorrow's game but he is equally aware Fenerbahce, as they demonstrated in the opening leg, will be no pushovers.
"It is one more big game for the club," said Grant. "When you get to the second game of the quarter-final, it is more important.
"We lost the first game and we need to win the second game to be in the next round. That is our aim.
"We lost the opening game even though we were much better than Fenerbahce but the players want, like everyone at the club, to be in the semi-final. But they know it will not be an easy game.
"The first match was one of our good performances with the worst result and we don't want it to be the same tomorrow.
"Fenerbahce are a good team. They know how to play good football and had a good result against us. We expect a very difficult game against a very good team."
But whatever the outcome of tomorrow's second leg, Grant does not worry it might have repercussions for his own future.
"How many times have you asked me this question this year?," he asked. "My answer is the same. This is my job and every time you ask it, you get the same answer.
"I need to do my job and I focus on the game tomorrow. What is best for me is to win the game and be in the next round. I cannot think about this before every game."
