Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba scored in each half for the Blues but it could have been more for Grant's side after they created a host of chances.

Grant told Sky Sports: "I'm happy that we continued the positive football we have played for the last four weeks. We got the win, we are in first place, so I'm happy."

He added: "We wanted to start the game well, we did that What is most important is to win and what was also important was that we continued the football we have played in the last few weeks."

But the Blues boss believes his side will still face a stern test when they face the Bundesliga side in a fortnight in Germany.

"It's not going to be easy to play away to Schalke. It's a beautiful stadium but it's in two weeks' time. We have league and Carling Cup games to worry about first and then we can look forward to it."
