Avram Grant revealed he is close to adding more players to his West Ham squad - but will only target those he believes can improve the side and not just to make up the numbers.
The Irons opened their pre-season schedule with a 2-1 victory at Peterborough last night, which included run-outs for fit-again Kieron Dyer and Herita Ilunga, while Thomas Hitzlsperger also made his debut after a free-transfer move from Lazio and Academy graduate Anthony Edgar impressed with what proved to be the winning goal.
Grant, though, intends to bring in at least a couple of quality men to bring added competition.
Mexican winger Pablo Barrera and French forward Loic Remy are both expected to arrive at Upton Park over the next few days.
"We are trying to bring in a few more players that can improve the team, improve the squad," said Grant, appointed as successor to Gianfranco Zola during the summer.
"Our target is to make signings this week, but we cannot talk about them until they are done. In football anything can happen until the last moment."
The Irons boss continued on www.whufc.com: "It is not a number. It is about players that can improve the team.
"If it will be two it is two, if it is five then five. We want players that can improve us and this is our target, not numbers."
Despite owners David Gold and David Sullivan pledging to strengthen the squad, given the club's high debt levels, some players could leave, with Olympiacos said to be tracking Alessandro Diamanti and Radoslav Kovac.
Scott Parker continues to attract interest from Aston Villa, but is scheduled to join up with the rest of the West Ham squad when they head off to Germany tomorrow.
England duo Robert Green and Matthew Upson will, along with United States defender Jonathan Spector and Switzerland'sValon Behrami, also head off to the training camp having been on extended leave after the World Cup.
While away, West Ham will face Borussia Monchengladbach on July 17 and also Greek side Panathinaikos.
Grant takes his side to MK Dons on July 28 and then npower Championship side Ipswich before the visit of Spanish outfit Deportivo la Coruna to Upton Park as the curtain-raiser to the new campaign.
