Sydney FC right back Rhyan Grant says the loss of defender Matt Jurman will not derail the Sky Blues undefeated start to the season.
Sydney’s player of the year last season, Matt Jurman moved to Korean club Suwon Blue Wings this week leaving a void in the Sky Blues' backline.
Playing alongside one time Socceroo Alex Wilkinson, Jurman had been a rock for Sydney this season, contributing to the league’s most miserly defence which has conceded only five goals in 13 games.
And with defence the bedrock of head coach Graham Arnold’s game plan, the Sky Blues' attacking fullback denied Jurman’s loss would affect Sydney’s undefeated march.
“Obviously, it’s great for Jurm’s to leave,” Grant said. “But it’s a bit unfortunate for us here at Sydney but we definitely have enough depth. We’ve got Sebastian Ryall to come in. He’s played 180 odd games or something ridiculous like that. He’s definitely ready to fill his boots. Arnie has said that time and time again, so, we are not worried about missing Jurms.
“Seb will do the exact same role, it’s just that his left foot is not as good, but we are not worried at all.”
Grant also said that if opposition teams want to focus on finding a weakness in Sydney’s new defensive partnership then bring it on.
“If teams feel like they can exploit us there then they’ll try that,” he said. “But Seb and Alex Wilkinson have played together on a few occasions this year and we’ve had no drama’s. He’ll fit exactly the same as it was.
“Wilko is obviously an unbelievable player and he’s done the same thing all his career, he’s very reliable. He’s been around for a long time to and he’s no mug.
“If teams feel they can exploit us down that side down the left without Jurman we are not worried at all.”
Sunday's clash against Central Coast sees the Sky Blues attempt to extend their record-breaking unbeaten 14-game start to the season and the 25-year-old said he was not taking the out of form Mariners side for granted.
“It’s a record at the minute 13 on the bounce in the league,” he said. “Since the pre-season all the way to now it’s been going well. It feels good to be part of the team. Arnie keeps saying that he wants to create history and it would be unreal to be part of the team doing that.
“We are not going to take Central Coast lightly. They played well against Melbourne City the other day and gave them a run for their money. We are expecting the same sort of fight but hopefully we are ready for it and up for it and we can continue our unbeaten run.”
