The home crowd at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff were left stunned as Englishman Daniel Sturridge failed from the spot with Great Britain's fifth attempt to lose it 5-4 after scores ended 1-1 at the end of normal time.

South Korea took a deserved lead through Sunderland's Ji Dong-Won on 29 minutes but Aaron Ramsey hit back for Great Britain from the penalty spot seven minutes later after a South Korean handball inside the area.

Neither side could break through in the second half and despite the introduction of crowd favourite Ryan Giggs late on, Great Britain were struck by the curse of England's poor penalty shootout record.

Brazil survived a scare against nine-man Honduras to book their date with South Korea in the last four with a 3-2 win, courtesy of Damiao's double at St James' Park.

The Internacional striker cancelled out Mario Martinez's stunning opener to make it 1-1 and scored the winner on the hour mark with a blasted shot after rounding the goalkeeper.

Roger Espinoza set the game alight again with a superb finish in the 48th minute but Brazil hit back from the penalty spot through Neymar two minutes later after a trip on Damiao.

Honduras battled hard after Wilmer Crisanto was sent off and their night was further soured when Espinoza was given his marching orders at the death, both for two yellow cards.

Earlier, Mexico blew a two-goal lead but came back to reach the semis with a 4-2 win over Senegal at Wembley.

Poor defending allowed Mexico to go 2-0 up through Jorge Enriquez and Javier Aquino but the lead was dashed with just over 20 minutes remaining when Moussa Konate scored his fifth goal of the tournament and substitute Ibrahima Balde headed in within seven minutes.

Tottenham forward Giovani dos Santos and substitute Hector Herrera punished terrible defensive errors in extra time to clinch the win for Mexico and set up a semi-final match with Japan.

The men joined Japan's women's team in the final four with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Egypt.

Kensuke Nagai, captain Maya Yoshida and Yuki Otsu were all on target at Old Trafford against 10-man Egypt, who had Saadeldin Saad sent off.

Nagai opened the scoring on 14 minutes and Saad was shown a red card four minutes before the interval after he clipped Manabu Saito on the edge of the penalty area as the last defender.

Japan took until the 78th minute to make it 2-0 through Yoshida before Otsu headed in Takahiro Ohgihara's delivery five minutes later.
