The hosts racked up their seventh home draw of the season, the most in Serie A, to move above Parma by one goal. Both teams were leapfrogged by Empoli, who pulled off a shock win at Napoli.

Siena's last game in front of their own fans had ended in a 3-0 victory over title-chasing Roma, but those supporters had less to cheer this time as their side failed to break down a stubborn Torino oufit.

The visitors, who only claimed their first away win of the season against Reggina two weeks ago and now have seven draws on the road, are four points above the bottom three.

But it could have been even better for Torino had Roberto Stellone converted the game's first chance on the quarter-hour mark.

The striker was picked out in the area in front of goal, but Siena stopper Alex Manninger got his angles right and was well positioned to make the save.

Massimo Maccarone tested Matteo Sereni with a header at the other end moments later after meeting Lucas Jarolim's right-wing cross

But the former Ipswich keeper could do nothing when Tomas Locatelli robbed Vincenzo Grella before firing in a snapshot from the edge of the area, and was grateful to see the ball fly off target.

Ex-Middlesbrough man Maccarone then headed just over the bar as Siena continued to do most of the pressing, while Sereni almost made a hash of Paul Codrea's long-range effort.

A minute before the break Torino might have snatched an unlikely lead as Simone Barone threatened to latch on to Grella's cross, but Valerio Bertotto arrived just in time to head the ball behind for a corner.

The Turin side carved out another opening four minutes into the second half, Stallone firing a cross-shot across the face of goal from the left wing which none of the attackers were able to turn into the net.

Daniele Portanova produced a fine save from Sereni's ambitious 30-yard free-kick, while at the other end another former Premier League goalkeeper, Manniger, once of Arsenal, was also called into action from a set-piece, keeping out Alvaro Recoba.

Tomas Locatelli could have won it for Siena late on, but his fierce shot from 25 yards on the left hand side was superbly saved by the impressive Sereni as both teams had to settle for a point in the fight to beat the drop.
