SOCCEROO midfield general Vinnie Grella isn’t getting caught up in all the hype surrounding playing Holland this weekend – for him, it’s all about an old foe...
Australia take on the Dutch on Saturday night in Sydney in a friendly ahead of the vital 2011 Asian Cup qualifier clash with Oman the following Wednesday night at Melbourne's Etihad.
The Socceroos played Oman in their opening 2007 Asian Cup campaign in Thailand. A last minute Tim Cahill goal spared Socceroo blushes in a 1-1 draw. Grella was replaced by super-sub Cahill that day and remembers the Omanis well.
"I wouldn't be getting too carried away with the result [against the Dutch]. I think the main game for us is Wednesday night against Oman," he said at today's launch of 1GOAL: Education For All campaign.
"Last time we played them was in the Asia Cup and they put us under a lot of pressure. It wasn't an easy game so we'll have to prepare well. Obviously the Dutch game will give us a good preparation and all the players will have acclimatised and settled in."
However, Celtic's Socceroo striker Scott McDonald appears likely to be out of at least the Holland game after picking up a knock in the weekend's 2-1 loss against Rangers. McDonald stayed in Scotland after the game and it's unclear whether he will travel to Australia.
Grella hopes the Asian Cup qualifiers provides Australia with another opportunity to show the region what they are all about after qualifying through AFC for the 2010 World Cup.
Currently, the Socceroos are struggling with just one point from two games in their Asian Cup group. Last January's 0-0 draw against Indonesia in Jarkarta was backed up with a 1-0 home loss to Kuwait - who the Socceroos play again in January.
"We want to qualify for Asia Cup and want to be a force in Asia. For us that becomes an important game," added Grella.
The midfielder was on hand today for the FFA signing-on to the worldwide campaign to change the lives of children in poverty through improving access to education.
1GOAL is the official campaign of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and is supported by a coalition of community organisations led by ActionAid Australia and FFA.
It aims to remind world leaders of their commitment to universal education as part of the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
Grella, and Matilda and Sydney FC striker, Sarah Walsh, joined Buckley, Federal Sports Minister Kate Ellis and others to sign-on to the join1goal.org website.
"We're not asking for money," said Grella."We're just asking all football fans to join our team and add their name to millions of others around the world urging governments to remember their commitment to education for all."
Walsh also said that it is vital that girls are given the chance to go to school also."Education is the key to helping to eradicate poverty and to build communities for boys and girls," she said.
Tonight. Australia-time. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will take part in the global launch of the 1GOAL campaign by video link along with the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, the President of FIFA, Joseph Blatter, Queen Rania of Jordan, UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, President Jacob Zuma of South Africa and President John Atta of Ghana.
Australian football players will be featured on the join1goal.org website along with other stars of the game.
