EXCLUSIVE: The Group of Death beckons for the Olyroos but striker Mark Bridge is confident that it won't be Lionel Messi who kills any medal hopes in Beijing.
After a short break, the players were gathering in North Sydney again today to prepare for Saturday's warm up match against New Zealand Under 23s.
Bridge hopes to use the occasion to further stake his claim for a starting slot but thoughts are already turning to the challenges in China.
Australia are generally considered to be in a tough group with Argentina the most formidable opponents.
Bridge is not scared though and says past experiences should not leave the Olyroos with an inferiority complex.
He told au.fourfourtwo.com: "People say we're in the group of death, don't they?
"Well, if we can get out of this group then we've got a very good chance in my book.
"Argentina have some great players of course but I remember playing them in an Under 20 friendly.
"We were 2-0 up with five minutes to go, the referee finds six minutes of added time and they came back to 2-2.
"I think that shows we can mix it with the best. Lionel Messi was in that team and Millsy (Mark Milligan) did an excellent job of containing him that day. That gives you confidence.
"Argentina are the favourites but we’re concentrating on the first game and looking to get off to a winning start."
